Estate-Grown may be one of the all-time great offerings from Stag’s Leap Vineyard. It’s not easy to say after 40 years of achievement, but it is certainly a candidate for one of the finest Stags Leap Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons ever made, particularly under this moniker (We have to exclude the Cask 23 and the Fay Vineyard.) Opulent, with fabulous texture, a dense purple color, great blueberry and blackcurrant fruit with spice and flowers, this is sexy Cabernet Sauvignon that should drink beautifully for another 20 years or more. The balance is sensational.

This wine boasts an excellent texture, although the finish is austere. Sweet black currant and blackberry fruit are wrapped with subtle oak and a weedy, tobacco herbaceousness. It is deep, dense, full-bodied, and impressively textured as well as concentrated. However, the high tannin profile suggests it should be cellared for 4-5 years; it will last 20-25 years.

This is one of the lighter, more perfumed vintages of the Jensen in recent memory. Crushed flowers and sweet red berries abound on the beautifully knit finish. Even though the 2013 is a bit on the lighter side, the 100% whole clusters are totally integrated. Above all else, the 2013 speaks to grace. Josh Jensen adds that total rainfall for 2013 was just 4 inches versus the 15-18 that was normal in what he jokingly refers to as "the last century." This is a surprisingly delicate wine, especially considering the drought conditions.

Today, the 2011 Jensen is gracious, light on its feet and absolutely impeccable in its balance. There is a lot to like here, that is for sure. Just beginning to show the first signs of aromatic development, the 2011 should continue to drink beautifully for another decade-plus. The 2011 has really come together over the last few years. Medium-bodied, layered and seamless, it’s an elegant and silky example of this cuvee to drink over the coming decade or more. These latest releases from Calera are rock-solid across the board, and looking at the 2011 Pinot Noirs specifically, they show the best of the cooler vintage and are gorgeous wines. Starting with the two Chardonnays, these are both outstanding whites that represent serious value. Moving to the 2011s, these are beautiful wines across the board and show perfumed, fresh and lively profiles.

This is the first vintage off this estate following the purchase of the old Robin Williams vineyard and house by Chateau Pontet-Canet proprietor Alfred Tesseron back in 2016. The estate includes just under 20 acres of mature Cabernet Sauvignon (75%), Merlot (18%) and Cabernet Franc (7%) vines, planted in 1990. Now officially dubbed “Pym-Rae,” in respect for the original name given to the vineyard by Robin Williams (Pym and Rae are the middle names of two of Williams’s children), the site is perched at an average altitude of 1,500 feet (500 meters) on Mount Veeder. This first vintage off this vineyard is nothing like other wines I have tasted from Mount Veeder. And this makes sense, because to visit the property is to grasp how remote this side of the mountain is, and although this and other vineyards around it have long been in production, until now the fruit has been sold to large wineries and blended away in Napa Valley AVA wines. Currently, the wines are made at a winery facility up on Howell Mountain, one that I have visited and at which I witnessed the 2016 vintage in production. Tesseron’s number-one demand of a temporary facility to produce his first Napa wine was simple: absolute control. Here he has it, at least until his winery on Mount Veeder has been completed (currently in the planning stages). Thomas Comme, the son of Jean-Michel Comme, the winemaker at Chateau Pontet-Canet, is winemaker and has lived at the estate since 2016. This first 2016 vintage is truly exciting?a sympathetically crafted, evocative expression of this place that is a must-try for readers who are as passionate as I am in discovering another unique expression of this incredibly multifaceted region for the highest quality Bordeaux blends.
