The Ceretto 2016 Barolo Bricco Rocche has always been one of the benchmark wines in this revered portfolio. It offers a lovely bouquet that explores some of the more nuanced sides of Nebbiolo that veer into the realms of rose, ash, tar and smoke. These pretty little details frame a solid core of berry fruit, cassis and dried cherry. One of the most distinctive aspects of this wine is the mouthfeel, which manages to impart its power and length without subtracting from its profound elegance. Fruit comes from a 1.5-hectare site owned by the Ceretto family, with sandstone soils at 350 to 370 meters above sea level. This is a Barolo to remember-and save in your cellar. Roberta Ceretto and her family report that all the estate vineyards, since 2015, are farmed according to biodynamic and organic practices. This group of wines includes the second vintage Ceretto's newest addition, the Barolo Bussia, with fruit from a tiny parcel in Bussia Soprana measuring less than one hectare. A substantial young Barolo, the 2020 offers notable mid-palate density and tons of pure explosive energy. Savory and mineral notes abound, but at this stage, the 2020 is a Barolo of fruit and texture. Practically seamless tannins pull it all together. I have a slight preference for the 2021, but it is neck and neck between these two great Barolos. Red and blue fruit aromas add hints of sweetness, but the bouquet quickly moves to iron ore and dusty ferrous notes. Of these three single-vineyard Barolos, Arione has the finesse, Cerretta has volume and structured tannins and Francia, well, has an even greater sense of tannic intensity. Like Roberto Conterno's other wines from this controversial vintage, this wine shines with brilliant and unexpected purity and intensity that is harder to find in its peers. It shows a deep understanding of the potential of a warm growing season, and the Nebbiolo is supple, velvety and uncharacteristically exuberant (for a grape whose elegance starts famously with understatement). Francia in Serralunga d'Alba evokes power and profound depth, with black and purple fruit highlights, rusty nail, cr?me de cassis, grilled rosemary and reddish rock or baked terracotta. The wine carries its considerable fruit weight with grace, and at the end of the day, it offers a complete portrait of vintage, variety and vintner. vinous：97 ポイント 97pts Drinking Window 2027 - 2057 From: 2017 Barolo, Part 2: The Late Releases (Oct 2021) The 2017 Barolo Francia is dense, rich and explosive right out of the gate. There is virtually no feeling of tannin, as the creaminess of the fruit is so expansive. Bright red cherry fruit, blood orange, kirsch, sage and menthol gradually appear as the 2017 starts to open in the glass. Deep, layered and explosive, the 2016 dazzles from start to finish. It possesses remarkable textural depth and mind-blowing balance. Even so, it has shut down considerably since I first tasted it. Rüncot is a wine that typically needs time to be at its very finest. That is especially true for the 2016. - By Antonio Galloni on January 2025 This is a stunning set of wines from Elio Grasso. As always, I tasted the 2021s next to the preceding vintage, which provided a terrific opportunity to compare the wines. I found the 2020s just as compelling as they were last year. The 2021s are the proverbial “iron fist in a velvet glove.” While many 2021s offer a good deal of relatively early approachability, the 2021s here require cellaring. Interestingly, today the Ginestra Casa Matè and Gavarini Chiniera feel a bit inverted in their personalities. The Ginestra comes across as a touch linear in its construction, while the Gavarini shows a bit more volume. I also tasted several vintages of the Barolo Riserva Rüncot that suggest there are great things in store here. These remain gorgeous, beautifully crystalline Barolos. VINOUS：100ポイント 100pts Drinking Window 2026 - 2041 From: 2019 Barolo: Back on Track (Jan 2023) The 2016 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is quite possibly the single greatest wine I have tasted in more than twenty years I have been coming here, with the possible exception of the 1989s and 1990s. Deep and powerful, but not at all heavy, the 2016 dazzles from the very first taste. Dark cherry/plum fruit, menthol, lavender, licorice and mocha saturate the palate in a Barolo of extraordinary richness and intensity. The 2016 spent four years in 100% new oak, and yet there is no trace at all of wood. Boasting noes of baked red cherries, polished leather, savory sweet tobacco, menthol, and cigar box, it offers a plush a rounded texture on the palate, with a nicely balanced, salty, mouthwatering feel, a ripe core, and its polished oak spice perfume lasting on the finish. It delivers a sense of intensity, clarity and momentum that is rare to find in this warm vintage. It is also a highly complex expression that shows a slow but very interesting evolution in the glass with dark fruit aromas that are fused seamlessly with spice, tarry resin and blue flower. This is a wine with big bones that moves with incredible grace and poise. I would recommend holding the bottle for at least five more years. At the conclusion of my tasting of 2011 Barolo, I concluded that the Bussia vineyard in Monforte d'Alba (with a smaller piece in the Barolo township) performed consistently better in the hot 2011 vintage than any other in the appellation. It is also one of the largest vineyards at 299 hectares, although it is divided into a half-dozen subsections that are farmed by a large number of producers. In general, Bussia occupies a higher altitude with vines planted from 210 and 460 meters above sea level. It boasts excellent exposures with mostly southern and southwestern positioning. These factors have greatly contributed to the quality of fruit in 2011. Higher elevations helped to keep the vines cooler during the hottest moments of the summer. Vines are also well established in this vineyard with extensive root systems that help guard against drought conditions. Of the various estates that farm Bussia, Poderi Aldo Conterno shows exceptional results with this set of new releases. Collectors looking to put aside a few bottles of 2011 Barolo should start here. There are delicate fragrances of tart berry fruit, cassis and blue flower over a streamlined and very silky mouthfeel. The Ravera vineyard near the winery measures three hectares across two distinct parcels. The first piece that faces Le Coste was planted in the 1980s, and the second parcel that looks toward Novello was planted in the 1990s. The wines are aromatic, gracious and super-expressive. I imagine the 2020s will drink well with minimal cellaring. Other than that, not much has changed here in terms of how the wines are made. The Rinaldi sisters continue to honor their parents' legacies, crafting wines that meld together old-school soul with contemporary touches of added precision. Sadly, Brunate was damaged by frost in 2021 and required considerable replanting, so Barolo production will dip for at least the next several years.

Champagne of mind-bending complexity, the 2013 possesses tremendous mid-palate intensity and power from the very first taste. Lemon confit, dried flowers, mint and a touch of brioche appear first, followed by light tropical accents that add an exotic flair. Imagine the sizzling energy of the 2008 and the persistence of 2004, with more mid-palate richness and riper fruit. Two-thousand thirteen was a cool, late ripening year. Harvest started at the beginning of October under sunny, dry days and cool nights, conditions that have not been seen since then. Readers will find a spectacular, modern Salon endowed with tremendous depth and very little of the youthful austerity that once defined Champagnes from cooler years here. The 5.5 grams per liter of dosage is perfectly judged. With a dosage of 5.5 grams per liter, the 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil possesses a complex, fruity bouquet mingling aromas of orchard fruit with notions of lemon oil, exotic fruits, spring flowers, almond and hints of menthol and buttery pastry. Full-bodied, rich and dense, with lively acids, it’s more complex and incisive than the 2002 and exhibits similar power to the 2012 at this early stage. Despite what was a challenging growing season for some producers, this is a superb Salon with a long, resonant finish. Salon's just-released 2013 Blanc de Blancs derives from a challenging growing season that is emerging, at least with respect to the region's top cuvees, as one of the most underestimated vintages of the last 15 years. After a cold winter, budbreak was relatively late. The weather was rainy throughout the spring, followed by hail episodes in the Cote des Bar, in Vallee de la Marne and in Cote des Blancs, notably in Epernay. In mid-July, the weather turned hot, sunny and dry until early September. Unfortunately, the rains returned until the end of the month, causing damage and precipitating a virulent attack of gray rot (botrytis) in some locations. Harvest took place at the beginning of October. The houses that managed to contain the attacks of gray rot and to pick the grapes during the mild days of October succeeded in making excellent wines with a classic, chiseled profile that has become only too rare in the interim.
