The finest rendition of this cuvee to date is the 2019 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with notes of red berries, plums, blood orange, peonies and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, layered and velvety, with an ample core of lively, perfumed fruit that almost entirely conceals the wine's rich structuring tannins, it concludes with a long and expansive finish.
Happily ensconced in his new winery, Charles Magnien continues his rapid ascent through the Burgundian firmament. Reporting yields in the region of 37 hectoliters per hectare, he began picking on September 13. This year, we took the opportunity to walk through the domaine's holdings in Cazetiers, which are very nicely maintained: hedged comparatively high, with cultivated soils and planted with the family's own massal selections. In the cuverie, vinification is gentle, with fermentation temperatures kept comparatively cool and pump-overs rather than punch-downs. New oak, largely from Tonnellerie Cavin, is increasingly deftly employed. And the result? 2019 is the finest vintage this domaine has produced to date: supple, seductive and perfumed, these are wines of immense charm that will turn heads in their youth but which have the substance and energy to age with grace, too. As the market starts to take notice, now is the time to secure allocations.

The 2019 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru, 25% whole bunch matured in two-thirds new oak (including a new cooperage, Lagrange), was surly and backward on the nose. Crushed stone infuses the dusky black fruit, along with hints of tobacco. This demands a lot of coaxing. The palate is well balanced with tarry blackberry and bilberry. It is initially quite austere but mellows with time, white pepper and truffle infusing the black fruit. Lively and quite persistent on the finish. This deserves five years in bottle to really meld together, but it has very good potential. -- Neal Martin
