The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques is once again immensely promising, soaring from the glass with a head-turning bouquet that mingles aromas of wild berries, orange rind, peonies and woodsmoke with savory nuances of black truffled, rich soil tones and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with racy acids, powdery tannins and a long, mineral finish. The 2018 was vinified with 70% whole clusters and matured in 66% new oak?a notable if hardly advertised change for a cuvee that historically always saw 100% new barrels.
