ピュリニー・モンラッシェ最高峰の造り手「エティエンヌ・ソゼ」

ドメーヌ・ルフレーヴと並び、ピュリニー・モンラッシェでもっとも尊敬を集める造り手がエティエンヌ・ソゼだ。1903年に生まれたエティエンヌはわずかな畑を親から継承し、1950年頃にはそれを12haまで広げた。惜しまれながらも1975年に他界。ひとり娘はヴォルネイのボワイヨ家に嫁いだため、孫娘のジャニーヌが夫のジェラール・ブードとドメーヌを継ぐことになった。ところがブドウ畑はエティエンヌの娘、ジャニーヌの母であるマダム・ボワイヨの所有で、1989年に相続税の問題を解決するためにこれを3人の子供に分け与えることにした。彼女はドメーヌがバラバラになることを望んではいなかったそうだが、息子のひとり、ジャン・マルク・ボワイヨが相続分を自身のドメーヌに組み込んでしまったため、エティエンヌ・ソゼの畑は9haまで縮小。

ただでさえ需要に対して供給量が不足しているところにもってきてこの始末。顧客のことを思えば畑が減ったからといって簡単にアロケーションを3分の2にすることもできない。そう考えたジェラール・ブードとジャニーヌは、91年から買いブドウによりこれまでの生産量を維持する道を選んだ。しかも、ワインをドメーヌものとネゴスものに分けるのではなく、各クリマ、自前のブドウの不足分を買いブドウで補い、ワインを造ることにした。つまりドメーヌの看板を降ろすという潔い道を選んだわけだ。なんて律義な夫婦なのだろう。

2000年からジェラールの娘であるエミリーが、そして2002年にはエミリーの夫、ブノワ・リフォーがメゾンに参画。エティエンヌ・ソゼの次世代を担う。

「モンラッシェ グラン・クリュ」は、ソゼが手掛ける、特級畑モンラッシェ。モンラッシェでもシャサーニュ寄りで、250年もの歴史を持つバロン・テナールの畑から購入したブドウを使用して造られます。「脱帽し、ひざまづいて飲むべし」とデュマが称えた言うまでもなく世界最高峰の辛口白ワイン。

The 2020 Montrachet Grand Cru comprises of three barrels this year, around 900 bottles. Very intense on the nose, as you would expect from this vineyard, it has a surfeit of mineralite and tension, hints of citrus lemon and orange pith that emerge with time. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, taut and fresh, powerful with a persistent finish. I think this might be one of the best Montrachets that Sauzet has produced. - By Neal Martin on October 2021

“It was an early harvest, from August 22,” winemaker Beno?t Riffault explained when I visited the winery in Puligny. “Unlike 2019, I felt that it was necessary to pick earlier. It was an easy vintage with healthy grapes. The surprise was the quality of juice from the press. It is a fruity vintage that is easy to understand. The 2019 is more concentrated and dense, while 2020 has more drinkability and freshness. The alcohol is slightly lower than the 2019 but slightly higher for the Village Crus. We decided to pick early and finished after seven days in the Hautes-Cotes around September 4 or 5. The wines are very compact now.” This was an impressive showing from Sauzet, who in my opinion is making better wines than ever, much more consistent than just a decade ago. Although the Grand Crus are very fine, as a consumer, I would set my sights on the over-performing Premier Crus such as the Les Truffieres and Les Referts.
