ハーラン・エステイトは世界の偉大なワインと匹敵するワインを生み出すことを目標に不動産業で一財を築いたビル・ハーラン氏が1984年にオークヴィルに興した。ブドウ畑は、等高線にそった段々畑。もっとも適正な場所にカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨン、メルロ、カベルネ・フラン、プティ・ヴェルドが植えられている。これらの品種からも分かる通りに、目指すは、ボルドー、メドックの頂点に君臨する5大シャトー。

ワインメーカーはボブ・レヴィ、コンサルタントはミッシェル・ロラン。パーカーはハーランに1994年、97年、01年、02年と4回100ポイントをつけた。世界にあまたあるワインの最高峰といえるだろう。

美しく磨かれたタンニンに加えて、精緻な骨格としなやかさがあり、長熟の素質の片鱗が伺われます。 ハーラン・エステートは偉大なクラシック・ブレンドと評され、深みのある美しい色、際立つ凝縮感、 複雑さ、味わい深さと洗練されたタンニン、エステートのユニークな特徴を存分にあらわした官能的な長い後味を持ち、今飲むと瑞々しさと新鮮さが魅力的ですが、非常に長い寿命をもつワインです。

パブロ・ピカソが「芸術は日常の生活でけがれた魂を洗い清めてくれる」と述べましたが、ハーランが目指すワインとは人と自然が造りだす芸術です。 ラベルには寓話のエピソードを描写した絵柄を使用。

Espresso, mocha, dark red berries, rose petals and spices are some of the many notes that emerge from the 2008 Harlan Estate. The wine fleshes out beautifully in the glass as it shows off its class and true pedigree. This is a decidedly ripe, forward vintage, but in exchange the wine will drink well right out of the gate. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.
Vintages 2008 and 2009 are totally different in character at Harlan Estate. In 2008 the two wines are also quite far apart stylistically, while in 2009 the wines are much more closely linked. The 2010s I tasted from barrel were all raciness and pure excitement. I am speechless. I love the pure aromas of currants, blackberries, minerals and mint -- eucalyptus too. Full body yet so refined and beautiful. Subtle complexity. Great length. Give it two or three years to come together, but hard to hold back.
