トスカーナ州ボルゲリで、唯一農家がはじめたワイナリー。初代オーナー故エウジェニオ・カンポルミ氏はこの地の可能性を見出し、惜しみない努力を注いできました。エウジェニオが亡くなった後、妻チンツィアと家族が彼の意思を引き継ぎ、2009年にはイタリア最優秀ワイナリーと評されるまでになります。トスカーナ最高峰のメルローといえばマッセート、レディガフィ、そしてメッソリオ。中でもその優美さは右岸のボルドーをも圧倒する別格の存在としてワイン・アドヴォケイト誌でも高い注目を集めています。

「メッソリオ」は、初ヴィンテージ1994年で、過去にワインスペクテーターで100点を獲得した特別な赤ワインです。メルロー100%から造られ、オレンジを煮詰めたような甘酸っぱい果実味を感じることができます。メルローは世界的に注目をされているブドウ品種であり、ボルゲリの気候ならではの果実味溢れたワインを造りだしています。フラッグシップはあくまでもパレオですが、こちらのメルロから造られるワインは味わいが分かりやすく世界的に評価は高くなっており、非常に注目を得ています。

マッキオーレが今のワイナリーを購入したとき、ブドウはなく、オリーブと麦ばかりでした。当時は麦を収穫することが一番大切でした。「メッソリオ」というのは、「麦を収穫する人」という意味。すなわち「五穀豊穣」を意味しています。また、メッソリオは栽培面積に対して収量が低く、実際に生産量も少ないので、ワインを造るために掛かるコストが最も高くなります。潜在的な生産ポテンシャルを100とすると、実際の生産量は10-20%しかワインにしていません。

■2021年ヴィンテージ情報■
2021年は雨の多い冬で始まり、平均より高い気温が続いたため、剪定作業は遅れて始まった。春になると気温がわずかに上昇し、シャルドネとメルローの両品種で芽吹きが急速に進んだ。その結果、4月初旬に2晩連続で夜間の気温が氷点近くまで低下した際、これら2品種は霜害のリスクが高まった。幸い、明らかな被害は確認されなかった。冬の降雨で蓄えられた水分により、4月後半の気温上昇は急速な栄養成長とブドウの枝の着実な発達をもたらし、この傾向は5月いっぱい続いた。夏は典型的な好天で幕を開けましたが、春の霜の影響で開花・着果・色づきがやや遅れました。シーズン終盤は非常に乾燥した期間が続き、収穫期全体を通じて乾燥状態が持続しました。収穫は例年通り8月第3週に始まり、9月末まで続きました。カベルネ・フランとカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンの収穫最終段階では降雨がありました。

The 2021 Messorio (Merlot) is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Dark, layered and enveloping, the 2021 boasts notable textural richness from start to finish. Dark red-toned fruit, spice, mocha, new leather and licorice fill out the layers effortlessly. There’s plenty of energy and depth to balance some of the more overt qualities. These days, Messorio is not as opulent as it was during the 1990s when it became an iconic wine in Italy, but the natural suitability of Maremma for producing exotic, sumptuous Merlots simply can’t be denied. The 2021 spent 16 months in French oak barrels, with a small amount of the wine (7%) that was aged in stoneware amphora. This wine represents Le Macchiole's homage to Merlot. The 2021 Messorio is a classic wine with firm lines and an almost glossy texture owing to the very warm but balanced conditions of this growing season. The fruit is bold and expressive with deep layers of Amarena cherry that transition to toasted spice, brown sugar and even a hint of olive oil focaccia. Similar to the Paleo (Cabernet Franc) and Scrio (Syrah) made by Cinzia Merli, this wine has a floral signature that reminds me of freesia (with the peppery notes) or a green calla lily. The tannins are very polished and fine-tuned. Of the five taste elements we perceive-sweetness, saltiness, sourness, bitterness and umami-the Messorio is all umami. I prefer this Messorio to the 2021 Masseto that I tasted in the same flight. I tasted the 2021 Paleo, Scrio and Messorio from barrel in 2022. I published my initial reviews back then, but I did not score the wines. It is a pleasure to return to these bottles today with an official numerical score and wine note. Published: Feb 16, 2024

A vivid merlot on the nose with plum, berry, clove and cedar aromas, as well as undertones of bark and five spices. Full-bodied yet balanced and energetic, with driving acidity and fine tannins that frame the wine nicely and add energy and verve. Sweet tobacco to the fruit. Best after 2029.
