初代エティエンヌがアンピュイの町に社屋を構えたのは遡ること、1945年。息子マルセルの代になり、同社の名声のもととなるコート・ロティの区画の数々を手に入れます。そして1980年代の半ば、かつてエティエンヌが働いていたコート・ロティの老舗ヴィダル・フルーリィ社、1990年代後半にはサン・ジョゼフの名ドメーヌ、ローヌ北部のジャン・ルイ・グリッパやド・ヴァルーイを、最近もコート・ロティもドメーヌ・ド・ボンズリーヌを取得しています。

現在では総面積55haに達する、名実ともにローヌを代表する生産者となっています。ギガル社の名声を高めているのは、コート・ロティの3つのプレスティージュ・キュヴェ、ラ・ムーリーヌ、ラ・ランドンヌ、そしてラ・トゥルク別名ギガル御三家と呼ばれています。

「エルミタージュ・ルージュ エックス・ヴォト」は、エルミタージュ最上の区画から、最良のヴィンテージのみ生産。新樽を使用し、約40カ月間の熟成。優れたヴィンテージのみに生産される、素晴らしい熟成の可能性を秘めた1本です。

紫の反射をもつ深いルビー。黒い果実、なめし革、甘草、東洋のスパイスなど香りは複雑。ユーカリミントのニュアンスも。リッチでしっかりした味わい。余韻もきわめて長い。

醸造：ステンレスタンクを用い、ルモンタージュ(ポンピングオーバー)しながら4週間の醸し発酵。新樽で40ヶ月の熟成。

The 2010 Hermitage Ex Voto continues to top out on my scale. This extraordinary Hermitage has more minerality and delineation than the 2009, as well as overflowing aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, jammy blackberries, violets, graphite and wood smoke. Massively concentrated, full-bodied, decadent, layered and sexy, it needs short-term cellaring but should be just about immortal in the cellar.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the 2010 Hermitage Ex Voto is as good as it gets. Following some of the most concentrated, rich Cote Roties ever made, it still ratcheted up the concentration level with its massive, palate saturating levels of gamey dark fruits, cassis, licorice, chocolate, graphite and powdered rock. It this beauty doesn’t make fireworks go off in your head, I don’t know what will. Full-bodied, deeply concentrated and structured, yet also fine, elegant and delineated, it is nothing short of incredible. Give this awesome Hermitage 5-6 years in the cellar and feel free to drink it anytime over the following 4-5 decades.

The father/son team of Marcel and Philippe Guigal continue to keep their estate at the top of the hierarchy in the Rhone Valley. All the way from their inexpensive Cotes du Rhone to their top-end Cote Roties and Hermtiage, the attention to detail and focus on quality is unmatched. Readers should also check out the recent Rhone Retrospective article I wrote that covered the Saint Joseph Vignes des Hospices, Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde, Cote Rotie Chateau d'Ampuis and Cote Rotie La Mouline cuvees going back for over a decade. I said it there, and I'll say it again here, this estate is producing some of the most incredible and singular wines in the world.
