It delivers a sense of intensity, clarity and momentum that is rare to find in this warm vintage. It is also a highly complex expression that shows a slow but very interesting evolution in the glass with dark fruit aromas that are fused seamlessly with spice, tarry resin and blue flower. This is a wine with big bones that moves with incredible grace and poise. I would recommend holding the bottle for at least five more years. At the conclusion of my tasting of 2011 Barolo, I concluded that the Bussia vineyard in Monforte d'Alba (with a smaller piece in the Barolo township) performed consistently better in the hot 2011 vintage than any other in the appellation. It is also one of the largest vineyards at 299 hectares, although it is divided into a half-dozen subsections that are farmed by a large number of producers. In general, Bussia occupies a higher altitude with vines planted from 210 and 460 meters above sea level. It boasts excellent exposures with mostly southern and southwestern positioning. These factors have greatly contributed to the quality of fruit in 2011. Higher elevations helped to keep the vines cooler during the hottest moments of the summer. Vines are also well established in this vineyard with extensive root systems that help guard against drought conditions. Of the various estates that farm Bussia, Poderi Aldo Conterno shows exceptional results with this set of new releases. Collectors looking to put aside a few bottles of 2011 Barolo should start here. Champagne of mind-bending complexity, the 2013 possesses tremendous mid-palate intensity and power from the very first taste. Lemon confit, dried flowers, mint and a touch of brioche appear first, followed by light tropical accents that add an exotic flair. Imagine the sizzling energy of the 2008 and the persistence of 2004, with more mid-palate richness and riper fruit. Two-thousand thirteen was a cool, late ripening year. Harvest started at the beginning of October under sunny, dry days and cool nights, conditions that have not been seen since then. Readers will find a spectacular, modern Salon endowed with tremendous depth and very little of the youthful austerity that once defined Champagnes from cooler years here. The 5.5 grams per liter of dosage is perfectly judged. With a dosage of 5.5 grams per liter, the 2013 Brut Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil possesses a complex, fruity bouquet mingling aromas of orchard fruit with notions of lemon oil, exotic fruits, spring flowers, almond and hints of menthol and buttery pastry. Full-bodied, rich and dense, with lively acids, it’s more complex and incisive than the 2002 and exhibits similar power to the 2012 at this early stage. Despite what was a challenging growing season for some producers, this is a superb Salon with a long, resonant finish. Salon's just-released 2013 Blanc de Blancs derives from a challenging growing season that is emerging, at least with respect to the region's top cuvees, as one of the most underestimated vintages of the last 15 years. After a cold winter, budbreak was relatively late. The weather was rainy throughout the spring, followed by hail episodes in the Cote des Bar, in Vallee de la Marne and in Cote des Blancs, notably in Epernay. In mid-July, the weather turned hot, sunny and dry until early September. Unfortunately, the rains returned until the end of the month, causing damage and precipitating a virulent attack of gray rot (botrytis) in some locations. Harvest took place at the beginning of October. The houses that managed to contain the attacks of gray rot and to pick the grapes during the mild days of October succeeded in making excellent wines with a classic, chiseled profile that has become only too rare in the interim. The 2021 is dark, racy and full of Lafite sensuality, all kicked up by the natural intensity of the year. Dark red/purplish fruit, mint, lavender and rose petal are all on display. Deep garnet-purple in color, it starts off a little broody before exploding from the glass with powerful scents of ripe blackcurrants, blackberry pie and preserved black cherries plus touches of cedar chest, fenugreek, cumin seed and charcoal with emerging wafts of violets, dark chocolate, star anise and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, this may be one of the most elegant, great Latours ever, revealing layer upon layer of fresh, crunchy black fruits with a vast array of exotic spice and floral nuances, framed by super ripe, super fine-grained tannins, finishing very long with mineral sparks coming through. This is so nuanced and perfumed that I imagine, in 50 years, this wine could be mistaken for a great red Burgundy. In 2017, some areas inland and to the north of Pauillac were frosted (plots that go into Les Forts and Pauillac), but its enviable proximity to the estuary meant the L’Enclos was completely spared. “The viticulture, as well as winemaking, have dramatically changed the styles of wine a vintage like 2017 can produce,” Frederic Engerer commented during my Primeurs visit, adding a reference to the vintage’s phenomenal ability to produce wines that are, “approachable now and have the ability to age.” Winemaker Helene Genin added that 2017 was the last year for Cabernet Franc, which is a minor component in Les Forts de Latour this year. Yet I was nonetheless taken aback by the quality of the 2019 Pavillon Rouge. Wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums and cherries mingled with rose petals and sweet spices, it's medium to full-bodied, sensual and concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. This is an exquisite Pavillon Rouge that is well worth seeking out. I confess that I don't buy many second wines, but I did purchase a case of this, with alacrity, right after tasting it. Philippe Bascaules-who served as directeur de l'exploitation under Paul Pontaillier between 1990 and 2011-took the reins at Chateau Margaux in early 2017, and he and his team have crafted one of the qualitative pinnacles of the 2019 vintage. Meticulously maintained vineyards, situated on the appellation's finest terroirs, are farmed intelligently, without deleafing or green harvesting-something other producers increasingly emulate as they pull back from the excesses of the early 2000s. Cabernet Sauvignon is on the increase, both in terms of plantings and as a percentage of the blend (it represents fully 90% of the grand vin in 2019), which works perfectly with Margaux's soils and the estate's elegant but concentrated style. Winemaking is very traditional, with classical macerations and an 18-month elevage in new oak (most barrels are produced in-house) punctuated by six rackings and one egg-white fining. An in-house bottling line is being acquired to bring even greater control and flexibility. Natural cork is the oder of the day for the reds, of course, but whites now see Diam 30 to ensure consistent evolution, and all are bottled in Margaux's new proprietary extra-dark glass bottle. vinous：93 ポイント 93 Drinking Window 2024 - 2039 From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022) The 2019 Pavillon Rouge is shockingly opulent and creamy. Silky, ripe tannins give the 2019 such a gorgeous sense of immediacy. Succulent red cherry, red plum, spice, new leather and incense are pushed forward.
