1950年代にトスカーナ州、キャンティ・クラシコの中心地に位置した『イゾレ』と『オレーナ』の二つの隣接した畑をデ・マルキ家が購入し、合併して設立されたワイナリーです。デ・マルキ家は長年トスカーナで主流だった小作制度を廃止し新しくブドウを植えワインセラーを拡大しました。

ピエモンテ北部で3世代に渡りワイン造りを受け継ぐ家系に生まれ、現在のオーナーであるパオロデ・マルキは、大変な頭脳派ということでも有名で、トリノ大学で醸造学を学び、1976年に同校を卒業後、自社ワイン生産を始めました。「イゾレ・エ・オレーナ」の名前は、氏の父が、1956年に12世紀から続いている「オレーナ」ブドウ園を購入し、その後「イゾレ」ブドウ園を買い足したことに由来するそうです。

2022年、パオロ・デ・マルキ氏が45年をかけて丹精込めて築き上げてきた、キャンティ・クラシコを代表するワイナリー、イゾレ・エ・オレナが、シャンパーニュ、パイパー・エドシック、シャルル・エドシックやモンタルチーノのビオンディ・サンティなどを所有する投資会社EPIグループに買収されました。

パオロ・デ・マルキ氏の公式コメントは、
「人生の大半をイゾレ・エ・オレナに捧げてきた者として、私のワイナリーが、私が個人的に深く愛着を持つ価値観(ノウハウの継承、テロワールの価値向上、卓越性の追求)を共有するグループに託されることを嬉しく思います。イゾレ・エ・オレナの新たな章に積極的に貢献し、円滑な移行を確実にすることを楽しみにしている。」

ディレクターのエマヌエーレ・レオロン率いる新体制の下で、名門ワイナリーは、更なる発展を目指しています。

「チェッパレッロ」は、パオロ・デ・マルキ氏によって1970年代後半から構想が練られていたといい、1980年がファースト・ヴィンテージとなる作品です。イゾレ・エ・オレーナの畑の最も標高が高い場所を流れる『ボッロ・チェッパレッロ』という小川にちなんで名付けられています。

濃く凝縮していますが、フィネスが熟したブラックフルーツのピュアな味を引き立てます。生き生きとした色、フレッシュなアロマ、繊細な個性を持ち、力強いフルーツはミネラルや甘草のニュアンスと混じり合い、長い余韻ときめ細かいタンニンが残ります。

ワイン評論家のマット・クレイマー氏いわく、イゾレ・エ・オレーナのブドウ畑は「見るからに秀抜な副区域の中にある、サンジョヴェーゼが真価を発揮する立地」にあるそうで、「ここで造られるキャンティ・クラシコは、例年地域最高のワインに数えられる」そして「さらにこの上をゆく、イゾレ・エ・オレーナの最高級品」が、サンジョヴェーゼ100%で醸される「チェッパレッロ」！とのこと。

Paolo di Marchi’s leaving present to Tuscany is this delightful 2019 Isole e Olena Cepparello. Cepparello is a blend of Sangiovese from different vineyards, selected by Di Marchi on the basis of "the best exposure, elevation, soil, genetics and age. I feel this adds complexity.” The first vintage was in 1980 when 100% Sangiovese was not permitted under the Chianti Classico rules. Those rules have since changed but the wine remains an IGT Toscana. It has a supremely enticing nose with cream and exotic spice, reminding me of Arabian spice markets. With the 2019 there is an added precision to the aromas, less heavy oak, and no greenness on the palate. It is concentrated with a rich velvety texture but without any heaviness and with a gentle unforced quality. The tannins are fine and very well integrated, in fact finer and better integrated than even the excellent 2016 vintage. It is of course very young now but it’s almost too delicious not to drink! Supremely graceful, it just gets better and better. 2023-2042

One of the icon wines of Tuscany, the Isole e Olena 2019 Cepparello is all Sangiovese crafted by the loving hands of a winemaking legend, the great Paolo De Marchi (who finalized the sale of his beloved estate when this wine hit the market). Indeed, this wine opens a discussion on the future of this celebrated IGT Toscana, a wine that followed a strict vision and style under De Marchi. It is elegant and rich with fine aromas of black and purple fruit. It ferments in oak and ages in French barrique for 20 months, with one-third new oak. The 2019 Cepparello has closed down quite a bit since I tasted it last year, as if all of its energy is focused inward. That won't be an issue in another few years' time, but for now readers should resist any temptation to open bottles. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous Sangiovese fruit, along with hints of blood orange, spice, cedar, mint and tobacco, all wrapped together by plush, silky contours. The purity of the fruit is just striking. In 2019, Cepparello is more finesse than power. I expect it will age beautifully over the next several decades. - By Antonio Galloni on June 2022
