1855年のボルドー格付で「プルミエ・グラン・クリュ・クラッセ（第一特別級）の地位を獲得した4大シャトーの1つ（現在は1973年に昇格した『シャトー・ムートン・ロスチャイルド』を含め“5大シャトー”と呼ばれます。）。メルドー地方のガロンヌ川河口の左岸にあるマルゴー村に存在し、勿論同村を代表するトップシャトー。ワインのスタイルは優美・エレガントを信条とし、ボルドーワインで最も女性的なワインと表現されています。

「シャトー・マルゴー」は、若いうちはタンニンに堅くガードされており、飲み頃を迎えるまでに時間を要しますが、長期熟成を経て現れるうっとりとするような滑らかな舌触り、そして豊かな味わいを持ちます。最高のテロワールで育ち、極めて厳しい選果をクリアした珠玉のブドウだけをグラン・ヴァンに使用。 口当たりの滑らかさ、そしてしっかりしたボディと繊細さを備えた味わい、並外れたタンニンは、非常にしなやかで、柔和で優しく最後まで広がります。

グラン・ヴァン・ド・シャトー・マルゴー 2019は秀逸なヴィンテージと評せるでしょう。2015、2016、2018、そして2019、これまで10年の間にシャトー・マルゴーが生み出したプレシャスなワインたちと肩を並べる仕上がりです。

シャトー・マルゴーにおいては常にカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンが主役であり、アッサンブラージュの90%を占めています。メルロは7%です。シャトーのシンボル的区画に加えて今年はル・オー・デュ・ジャルダン(Le Haut du Jardin)の区画のメルロを含み、さらなる丸みと優雅さがもたらされています。その他カベルネ・フラン(2%)とプティ・ヴェルド(1%)、以上が今年の品種構成です。シャトー・マルゴーは生産の37%を占めています。

■2019年ヴィンテージ情報■
春は穏やかな好天が続き、気温はほぼ平年並みでした。4月末、そして6月5日から18日の期間にはかなりの量の降雨を記録しています。開花は6月1日から9日にかけて、比較的順調に進みました。一部メルロの古株区画においてのみ、花ぶるいの症状が見られています。
夏は多雨だった春とは実に対照的でした。今夏は長期にわたって高気圧に覆われ、6月21日から9月21日の期間の雨量はたったの64ミリメートル。2019年の夏で特に印象深かった出来事は、6月末、そして7月22日から24日にかけての酷暑です。マルゴーでも最高気温39.9度を記録しました! 赤ワイン用ぶどうの収穫は9月18日にスタート。理想的な条件のもと、十分に凝縮した完璧な熟度のメルロが収穫できました。9月22日から29日にかけてはあいにくの悪天候でしたが、ぶどうの衛生状態に大きな影響はありませんでした。逆に、雨と曇天のおかげで熟度の進みが抑えられ、ぶどうに過度な負担がかかることもなく、その結果、酸はうまく保たれて、アルコール度数も高すぎない数値に落ち着きました。ぶどう果実は8月5日から10日にかけて着色し、それ以降ゆっくりと凝縮を進めました。上述の雨で心配された希釈の被害もほとんどなく、9月末から10月初旬にかけて収穫を迎えることが出来ました。 収穫作業は10月10日に終了しています。

Is the 2019 Chateau Margaux the wine of the vintage? A strong case in its favor could certainly be made. Soaring from the glass with aromas of blackberries, raspberries, rose petals, violets, pencil shavings and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, layered and sensual, with a strikingly vibrant core of fruit that's framed by ripe, powdery tannins and bright acids, concluding with a penetrating, mouthwateringly saline finish of almost interminable duration. Complex, elegant and utterly compelling, this is a brilliant Bordeaux that anyone with the requisite disposable income is going to want to own.

Amazing aromas of crushed stones and wet soil with fresh mushrooms, then going on to violets and other flowers. Dark fruit, too. Full-bodied, yet agile and fine, with a linear flow of tannins that run through the center of palate. The finesse of the tannins is exceptional, like raw silk and changing all the time. Cool and energetic, yet reserved. Zen-like.

The 2019 Chateau Margaux possesses off the charts richness to go along with plush contours and mind-blowing balance. All the elements are so wonderfully woven together. It's as if all the Chateau Margaux signatures are dialed up to eleven, but without losing any of the classic Margaux character. The purity of the red-toned fruit is just breathtaking. The Merlot was picked early, but then rain during harvest delayed the ripening of the Cabernets, which turned out to be a huge advantage. Antonio Galloni. Tasting date: February 2022

The 2019 Chateau Margaux, bottled in July 2021, is absolutely divine on the nose. It unfurls to reveal exquisitely defined black fruit infused with graphite, Japanese nori and just a hint of potpourri and crushed stone. This is supremely well focused, refined and correct, so much so that you would think it comes from a cooler growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, filigreed tannins that envelop the senses. Flavors of blackberry and bilberry, tinged with sea salt and black pepper, merge into a slightly more sensual finish that is still quintessentially Margaux. I used the word "effortless" in my note from barrel, and that rings true in bottle, though maybe there is now even more persistence. Quite stunning. Neal Martin. Tasting date: December 2021

The 2019 Chateau Margaux is another inky hued beauty from this estate that does everything right. Incredible notes of blackcurrants, blueberries, sandalwood, cedar, and loads of floral tones all dominate the bouquet, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, flawless integration in its tannins, acidity, and fruit, building structure, and an almost 'iron fist in a velvet glove' like mouthfeel. Reminding me of the 2016, yet with even more density, it's a quintessential Chateau Margaux that will benefit from a decade of cellaring and keep for 50 years or more.(6/2020)
