カリフォルニアにおいてシャルドネやピノ・ノワールの産地として、少しずつ認知されてきたサンタ・バーバラのAVA サンタ・リタ・ヒルズ。ザ・ヒルトは、太平洋から内陸20kmの位置にあり、ここは海から吹き込む冷たい風を遮る障害物が一切なく、この冷涼な気候により、フレッシュな酸を得ることができ、ザ・ヒルトの独特な個性と複雑味のあるワインに仕上がっているのです。

「エステート」と名前の付いたこのワインには、サンタ・リタ・ヒルズの南西の角にある小さな地域の果実と風味が凝縮されています。クローンや土壌タイプだけでないその他多くの特徴が、ニュアンスや複雑味となって、そのまま表現されています。ワインのブレンドに必要とされる要素が最大限生み出される地域でその結果、最も完成されたワインが生み出されるのです。

「Rancho Salsipuedes」内、The Old GuardとThe Vanguardに使われない区画から造られるワインで、この敷地の個性が全面的に伝わってくるワインに仕上がります。

【ワイン・メーカー、マット・ディーズのコメント】
緑、黒、赤のニュアンスが織りなす、豊かで忘れがたいブーケ。クローブ、ハイビスカス、バラ、ブラックチェリー。胡椒の実と黒プラム。これらの驚くべき要素を言葉で捉え尽くすのは難しい。グラスの中で刻一刻と万華鏡のように変化する。レッドグレープフルーツ、シガーボックス、紅茶、スミレ。土の香りを帯びた後、口中でラズベリーのような風味が広がる。塩気と旨味に心地よい酸味が加わる。全てがまとまりと活力を保ち、ゆっくりと着実に高まり、鮮やかで美味なる黒果実の頂点へと至る。そこには明るい酸味の奔流が伴う。ほのかなほこりっぽいタンニンが果実を支え、長くうねる余韻へと導く。持続性があり、洗練され、見事な出来栄えである

The 2021 Pinot Noir Estate is gorgeous. A wine of depth and substance, the Estate is also wonderfully complex right out of the gate. Dried cherry, rose petal, mint, cedar and dried herbs all race across the palate in this wonderfully layered, expressive Pinot Noir. All the elements are so well balanced. The 2021 Estate Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills is very pretty, with beaming red-fruited aromas melding with those of fresh herbs and the region's classic salinity. The palate is succulent and gently tensile, leading to a beautiful finish that was a bit clipped but nevertheless wraps up a beautiful wine.

The Sta. Rita Hills-focused sister brand of Jonata, The Hilt centers around two of the area's most sought-after and renowned sites, Bentrock and Radian. Located in the far southwestern corner of the region, these designates tend to elevate the rosters of any winemaker fortunate enough to secure them and consistently produce intense, structurally searing wines built for the long haul, bottled here as estate wines. Winemaker Matt Dees's approach at The Hilt echoes that of Jonata, maintaining the energy instilled by the sites but rounding it slightly and presenting it with the textural polish that permeates both labels. Chardonnays are pressed gently, spend 12 months in barrel undergoing partial malolactic conversion and typically undergo a single batonnage via rolling before finishing with five months of aging in tank. Pinot Noirs contain minimal whole clusters, are concentrated slightly via saignee and aged 12 months in barrels that are typically 10% to 25% new. Published: Oct 11, 2024
