Delicious already, but give it at least six years of bottle age. Yet I was nonetheless taken aback by the quality of the 2019 Pavillon Rouge. Wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums and cherries mingled with rose petals and sweet spices, it's medium to full-bodied, sensual and concentrated, with beautifully refined tannins, racy acids and a long, penetrating finish. This is an exquisite Pavillon Rouge that is well worth seeking out. I confess that I don't buy many second wines, but I did purchase a case of this, with alacrity, right after tasting it. Philippe Bascaules-who served as directeur de l'exploitation under Paul Pontaillier between 1990 and 2011-took the reins at Chateau Margaux in early 2017, and he and his team have crafted one of the qualitative pinnacles of the 2019 vintage. Meticulously maintained vineyards, situated on the appellation's finest terroirs, are farmed intelligently, without deleafing or green harvesting-something other producers increasingly emulate as they pull back from the excesses of the early 2000s. Cabernet Sauvignon is on the increase, both in terms of plantings and as a percentage of the blend (it represents fully 90% of the grand vin in 2019), which works perfectly with Margaux's soils and the estate's elegant but concentrated style. Winemaking is very traditional, with classical macerations and an 18-month elevage in new oak (most barrels are produced in-house) punctuated by six rackings and one egg-white fining. An in-house bottling line is being acquired to bring even greater control and flexibility. Natural cork is the oder of the day for the reds, of course, but whites now see Diam 30 to ensure consistent evolution, and all are bottled in Margaux's new proprietary extra-dark glass bottle. vinous：93 ポイント 93 Drinking Window 2024 - 2039 From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022) The 2019 Pavillon Rouge is shockingly opulent and creamy. Silky, ripe tannins give the 2019 such a gorgeous sense of immediacy. Succulent red cherry, red plum, spice, new leather and incense are pushed forward. Wafting from the glass with aromas of violets, dark berries, licorice, loamy soil, black truffle and subtle spices, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless, elegantly muscular profile, terrific purity and energy, beautifully powdery tannins and a long, resonant finish. It checks in at 13.7% alcohol, the same as the superb 2009, but it is even deeper, more vibrant and more complex than the 2009. This will be worth a special effort to seek out and only confirms Montrose's status as one of the contemporary Medoc's leading estates and a de facto first growth. This large estate overlooking the Gironde in Saint-Estephe produces some of Bordeaux's greatest and longest-lived wines, and the last 15 or so years have seen it benefit from sustained and intelligently directed investment. There's a brand new winery and cellars, of course, but there's a lot of work going on in the vineyards too. When Olivier and Martin Bouygues acquired Chateau Montrose from the Charmolue family in 2006, the estate included fully 17 hectares of pre-clonal vines dating back to the early 20th century, and a massal selection program has since identified 80 viable individuals, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, for use when replanting (the same efforts are currently being lavished on Merlot, drawing on a block behind the chateau acquired from Phelan-Segur). Now, cover crops are being trialed, and the soils are being cultivated more superficially to avoid disrupting the microbiome. All the elements are so well-balanced. Red/purplish fruit, lavender rose petal, gravel and spice are all accented by veins of intense minerality that lend shape and energy. Parker, Jr. Issue Date 31st Aug 2012 Source 202, The Wine Advocate The 2009 was not part of this vertical tasting, so I am repeating the tasting note published in issue #199 of The Wine Advocate from a tasting done in January, 2012. A candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2009 La Mission-Haut-Brion stood out as one of the most exceptional young wines I had ever tasted from barrel, and its greatness has been confirmed in the bottle. A remarkable effort from the Dillon family, this is another large-scaled La Mission that tips the scales at 15% alcohol. A blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (47% of each) and the rest Cabernet Franc, it exhibits an opaque purple color as well as a magnificent bouquet of truffles, scorched earth, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, subtle smoke and spring flowers. The wine’s remarkable concentration offers up an unctuous/viscous texture, a skyscraper-like mouthfeel, sweet, sumptuous, nearly over-the-top flavors and massive density. Perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime La Mission-Haut-Brion, the 2009 will take its place alongside the many great wines made here since the early 1920s. The good news is that there are nearly 6,000 cases of the 2009. It should last for 50-75+ years. Given the wine’s unctuosity and sweetness of the tannin, I would have no problem drinking it in about 5-6 years. Full-bodied, layered and enveloping, it's deep and intense, with beautifully rich, powdery tannins and vibrant flavors. Concluding with a long, saline finish, this rivals the 2016 as the finest Cheval Blanc of the decade, and in many respects it might be thought of as the latter vintage's sun-kissed cousin. Full-bodied with incredible energy of fine tannins and lively acidity. It grows on the palate and escalates to the summit of perfect wine. Very powerful at the end. Holding back and a great finish. Quantity and quality. Menthol. Cool. One of the greatest young Cheval Blancs I have ever tasted. 58% merlot, 34% cabernet franc and 8% cabernet sauvignon. Great finish. Give it time. Try after 2028. VINOUS：100 ポイント 100pts Drinking Window 2034 - 2059 From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022) The 2019 Cheval Blanc is a stunning, riveting wine. There is simply nothing like a great Cheval in all of Bordeaux. Soaring aromatics are immediately alluring. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, cinnamon, espresso and dried herbs build in a Cheval that possesses tremendous layers and exceptional balance. Clean, mineral notes lend tension and drive. The 2019 is a bit strict today and not ready to show all its cards, but it is very clearly a special, special wine in the making. In 2019, the Grand Vin represents 82.5% of the estate's production, a very high amount by any measure. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. The 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a Jacques Perrin is another prodigious version of this wine. How many wines in this world can be so huge yet so lacking the feeling of weight? There's plenty of layered spice but also a core of raspberries; rich tannins, yet no real astringency; and a long finish without any apparent heat. Wow! According to Marc Perrin, "2016 has this extra balance that really makes it unique." But I would point out that the 2015s at this historic property are also top notch. The family continues to espouse the use of foudres for most of their wines, feeling, says Marc, "We have high levels of tannins already." If you count all of the holdings outside Chateauneuf, the family owns probably the single largest vineyard estate in the Southern Rhone, with 350 hectares being farmed organically. Potent blackberry, cassis, potpourri and garrigue aromas expand with air, picking up Indian spice and mineral nuances and a hint of smokiness. Sweet and seamless in texture, offering wonderfully concentrated yet lively dark fruit liqueur, spicecake and floral pastille flavors and a touch of candied licorice. Deftly blends richness and vivacity and finishes spicy, focused and extremely long; pliant tannins add shape and closing grip. - By Josh Raynolds on December 2016 Marc Perrin told me that he feels blessed that his family’s 100 acres of vines are planted to such a diverse array of varieties, especially Mourvedre, since so many recent vintages have suffered short Grenache crops and many of his neighbors’ production levels have been way off in years like 2014 and 2013. In those vintages spring frosts and hail caused often sever damage to the early-ripening Grenache fruit so it was a big advantage to have later-ripening varieties to compensate for a smaller-than-normal harvest, he told me. Mourvedre is also a great variety to use to bring structure to Chateauneuf-du-Papes made in hot vintages, when the Grenache’s ripeness can sore and the resulting wines run the risk of coming off flabby. That’s clearly the case with the 2015s here as the wines possess more firmness than other examples from the region, which means that they should age very well, which is always a hallmark of this iconic estate. The 1989, from another hot vintage, like 2015, is drinking fabulously right now, and it shows no sign of falling apart any time soon.
