Deep garnet-purple in color, it starts off a little broody before exploding from the glass with powerful scents of ripe blackcurrants, blackberry pie and preserved black cherries plus touches of cedar chest, fenugreek, cumin seed and charcoal with emerging wafts of violets, dark chocolate, star anise and fertile loam. Medium-bodied, this may be one of the most elegant, great Latours ever, revealing layer upon layer of fresh, crunchy black fruits with a vast array of exotic spice and floral nuances, framed by super ripe, super fine-grained tannins, finishing very long with mineral sparks coming through. This is so nuanced and perfumed that I imagine, in 50 years, this wine could be mistaken for a great red Burgundy. In 2017, some areas inland and to the north of Pauillac were frosted (plots that go into Les Forts and Pauillac), but its enviable proximity to the estuary meant the L’Enclos was completely spared. “The viticulture, as well as winemaking, have dramatically changed the styles of wine a vintage like 2017 can produce,” Frederic Engerer commented during my Primeurs visit, adding a reference to the vintage’s phenomenal ability to produce wines that are, “approachable now and have the ability to age.” Winemaker Helene Genin added that 2017 was the last year for Cabernet Franc, which is a minor component in Les Forts de Latour this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of violets, dark berries, licorice, loamy soil, black truffle and subtle spices, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless, elegantly muscular profile, terrific purity and energy, beautifully powdery tannins and a long, resonant finish. It checks in at 13.7% alcohol, the same as the superb 2009, but it is even deeper, more vibrant and more complex than the 2009. This will be worth a special effort to seek out and only confirms Montrose's status as one of the contemporary Medoc's leading estates and a de facto first growth. This large estate overlooking the Gironde in Saint-Estephe produces some of Bordeaux's greatest and longest-lived wines, and the last 15 or so years have seen it benefit from sustained and intelligently directed investment. There's a brand new winery and cellars, of course, but there's a lot of work going on in the vineyards too. When Olivier and Martin Bouygues acquired Chateau Montrose from the Charmolue family in 2006, the estate included fully 17 hectares of pre-clonal vines dating back to the early 20th century, and a massal selection program has since identified 80 viable individuals, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, for use when replanting (the same efforts are currently being lavished on Merlot, drawing on a block behind the chateau acquired from Phelan-Segur). Now, cover crops are being trialed, and the soils are being cultivated more superficially to avoid disrupting the microbiome. Dark, rich and brooding, the 2020 possesses remarkable intensity, and, yet it is somehow not excessively heavy. Time in the glass brings out the wine's more elegant sophisticated side. All the elements are so well-balanced. Red/purplish fruit, lavender rose petal, gravel and spice are all accented by veins of intense minerality that lend shape and energy. The blend is two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and one-third Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Maya slowly unfurls to reveal a firework display of redcurrant preserves, kirsch, boysenberries and wild blueberries, followed by iron ore, red roses, cardamom, fallen leaves and crushed rocks, with a waft of pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is stunningly graceful and refined, featuring exhilarating mineral sparks among the red and black fruits, finishing with so much brightness and energy. Breathtaking! ジェブ・ダナック：100 ポイント One of the finest wines in the vintage is the 2019 Maya Proprietary Red Wine and red wine doesn't get any better. The usual blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Cabernet Franc its deep purple hue is followed by an incredible bouquet of blackcurrants tobacco dark chocolate and crushed stone which turns more floral pretty and complex with time in the glass. Full-bodied on the palate it marries a rare sense of elegance and finesse with incredible intensity. It's impossible to resist today yet merits at least 5-7 years of bottle age and I have no doubt this beauty will still be enjoyable at age 50. Bravo!

Proprietor Suzanne Deal Booth and winemaker Nigel Kinsman crafted a wine that captures all the pedigree of this historic Rutherford site in spades. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry, mocha, blood orange, spice and mint all soar out of the glass as this majestic, statuesque Cabernet Sauvignon shows off its undeniable pedigree. In 2019, Kinsman opted to co-ferment a dollop of Cabernet Franc, a choice that paid off brilliantly. The 2019 is not as potent as the 2018, but instead is all about finesse and elegance. It shows just how refined Napa Valley can be. I only hope I have a chance to taste it as a mature wine. Deep garnet-purple in color, it has an evocative, savory nose of charcuterie, tapenade and saut?ed herbs over a core of warm cassis, damp soil and truffles, plus wafts of ripe plums and raspberry leaves. Medium to full-bodied with lots of tight-knit savory and earthy layers, the fruit is beautifully supported by fantastic freshness and a firm, grainy texture, finishing long and minerally. A stunning expression of this very special place! 470 cases were made. While the Bella Oaks vineyard in Rutherford has a lot of history, formerly selling fruit to famous wineries such as Heitz and Staglin, it has only been launched as a producer in its own right. Since acquiring the vineyard in 2010, Suzanne Deal Booth has set about rehabilitating the vineyard with the help of David Abreu.
