It reflects the cold character of the vintage. There are 600 bottles of this vintage. Raul Perez doesn't stop. Beyond the huge range of wines I tasted, he has more-the R+D wines under the RaulPerez label, and he has FOUR whole new projects, of which I tasted only Valdecanada (from Ponferrada). The Valdecanada project started in 2008/2009 when he bought a winery in the zone of Ponferrada (Cabildo) that came with to hectares of vineyards. The grapes were added to the Ultreia wines, but he saw the potential to achieve lower alcohol and more freshness and decided to start separating them in 2015. It's a zone with schist and slate soils. The wines that age in that winery are all aged under a veil of flor yeast, which allows him to work with very little to no sulfur. The style of the wines is quite different from the other wines from Perez. There are three very different zones in Bierzo-Corullon, Valdecanada and Valtuille-different soils and altitudes, and he now works in two of them. So, I was excited when they told me this time we'd taste the 2013 La Roza, produced with grapes from three plots in the La Roza zone of the Atauta Valley that are thought to be some 160 years of age. All the processes follow biodynamic principles, and the wine was bottled after 19 months in second use French barriques. It was closed and felt really tight, but it has the most elegant texture and impressive palate of all the wines. Unfortunately, this is one of those almost virtual wines, as only 295 numbered bottles were filled in September 2015. The grapes struggle to ripen here-the wine is labeled at 12% alcohol. They started here in 2019, but the vintage that they feel comfortable with is 2021. The soils are very compact, and it's a lot of work with the horses, but the results are spectacular. It was picked in early October, and the full clusters fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts. It's elegant and floral, clean and very showy. The wine has great elegance, balance and purity. This is a new face of Bierzo previously unknown to me. Great finesse! Some 6,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in early 2023. Price is still tentative. Viariz is a new project in Bierzo from Raul Perez, Alfonso Carrascosa and the investors of Raul Perez with vineyards they bought from Descendientes de Jose Palacios, including the highest vineyard in Bierzo, at 1,045 meters in altitude. Viariz is the name of the village, and all the vineyards are there. They have seven hectares, but there are lots of missing vines so that they barely get 5,000 kilograms of grapes from that extension with a lot of work; so, the price per kilogram of grapes turns out to be really expensive. They are still in the process of recovering the vineyards and decompacting the soil, which is very hard. They work everything by horse and organically; it's all steep slopes above the rest of Bierzo. They started in 2019 and have wines from 2019, 2020 and 2021, but nothing has been released yet and they are unsure how they are going to do it. I only tasted a small sample and was blown away by some of the wines. They still don't have importers either. It's very seldom that something like this flies under the radar, and I couldn't believe that Perez was hesitant to show me the wines. The top of the range from 2021, called La Muria-the name of the vineyard-really made my hard beat faster. I was a bit unsure but wanted to follow my heart. I uncorked and drank another bottle a few days later, and the feeling was the same. A true coup de coeur! This will make a lot of noise. The wine has contained alcohol but has a roundness and a ripe sensation on the nose. They are using 25% foudres for the élevage here, and that percentage will be increased in the future. It has a medium to full-bodied palate with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. Some 4,800 bottles produced. Raúl Pérez has bought some of the plots he used to vinify for the La Vizcaína range. In 2022, he used less full clusters for the fermentation of the reds. The single-vineyard bottlings of the Ultreia range are gradually being moved to oak foudres, and he's leaving the barriques. It comes from a vintage when the vines delivered very healthy grapes and a larger crop. They had to wait to harvest the grapes because the higher yield meant the plants had problems to ripen all the fruit. The palate is elegant and fresh, with clean flavors and precision. 2,300 bottles produced. Raúl Pérez has bought some of the plots he used to vinify for the La Vizcaína range. In 2022, he used less full clusters for the fermentation of the reds. The single-vineyard bottlings of the Ultreia range are gradually being moved to oak foudres, and he's leaving the barriques. It comes from the coolest plot, the best place for warm years, with more clay and deeper soils and more retention of water. To me, this outperforms the 2021. The wines always ferment, year after year, in the same vats and barrels. It fermented with 100% full clusters. There are some 8,000 bottles. Raúl Pérez has bought some of the plots he used to vinify for the La Vizcaína range. In 2022, he used less full clusters for the fermentation of the reds. The single-vineyard bottlings of the Ultreia range are gradually being moved to oak foudres, and he's leaving the barriques. So delicious now, but one for the future, too. ワインアドヴォケイト：96 ポイント Rating 96 Release Price $628 Drink Date 2021 - 2033 Reviewed by Luis Gutierrez Issue Date 1st Jul 2021 Source Issue 255 End of June 2021, The Wine Advocate The Unico released in 2021, 10 years after the harvest, is the 2011 Unico, selected from 40 of their 210 hectares of vineyards. 2011 is a concentrated and ripe vintage, and they selected 95% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon that were cooled in a cold room for 24 hours before being sorted; the bunches and grapes macerated at 9 to 10 degrees Celsius for three to four days, and then it was inoculated with a pied de cuve to ferment with pumping overs. Malolactic was in stainless steel, and the wine was put through a long aging, 10 years between oak and bottle, using new and used French and American oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats. For Vega Sicilia, 2011 was a fresher year than 2010, not the common idea about those vintages in Ribera del Duero. The wine has a developed nose with some notes of ripe black fruit, meat and underbrush, somewhat herbal and perfumed. There is something about the nose of the Unicos that I cannot quite describe but is quite distinct, and it's in this vintage and also in the Reserva Especial. 88,288 bottles, 3,505 magnums, 318 double magnums, 60 Imperial and 3 Salmanazar were produced. It has the core of the 2012, possibly the higher percentage in the blend too, which gives the power and structure with the freshness and tension of 2013, which also provides some balsamic characteristics, and less of the 2011. It has a very harmonious and subtle nose, and the wine shows extra complexity and elegance. It has the Único nose with more nuance and subtleness, but what I liked the most was the silky texture and the elegance of the tannins, as usual combining more developed characteristics with elegance and freshness. This is another stellar release of their non-vintage classical blend, slowly going back to the style of yesteryear. A total of 18,518 bottles and 261 magnums were produced. It was bottled in May 2021. At Vega Sicilia, they are increasing their capacity in large oak vats, which are incorporated in the first year of elevage of the wines. 2020 was challenging with rain just before and during the harvest, and 2015 was a warm and ripe year. It's a blend of Tinto Fino with some Cabernet Sauvignon with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.85 and 5.2 grams of acidity (measured in tartaric acid per liter of wine); so, it's a slightly lighter version of Reserva Especial. When in theory they used three warm, ripe and powerful vintages, the blend is not excessively powerful, but the longer elevage has polished that power and delivered a classical and proportioned wine, aromatic, spicy, with the Vega nose and a velvety palate with very fine tannins and great elegance. 18,318 bottles and 233 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2019. Vega Sicilia has increased the capacity in oak vats-they have 40,000 liters more. They produce between 235,000 and 300,000 bottles per year depending on the vintage.

They produced it with the grapes from 40 of the 210 hectares of vineyards they have, with a total of 55 separate plots and 19 different soils. It's mostly 95% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that are cooled down for 24 hours and then fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation was in stainless steel and the aging in 225-liter oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats for a long time as this was bottled in June 2018. 2012 is a concentrated year, warm and dry with some rain at the end of September that helped the end of the ripening process of healthy grapes with lots of color and ripe tannins. The wine has a ripe nose, with intoxicating notes of black fruit, fresh meat and blood, a spicy touch from the American oak and an earthy twist. It's a voluptuous and decadent vintage for Vega Sicilia, for those that favor years like 2006, a bit atypical, or 1999. The wine finished with 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.88 and 5.1 grams of acidity (tartaric). 88,188 bottles, 3,537 magnums, 328 double magnums, 55 imperials and five Salmanazar produced.
