1855年のボルドー格付で「プルミエ・グラン・クリュ・クラッセ（第一特別級）の地位を獲得した4大シャトーの1つ（現在は1973年に昇格した『シャトー・ムートン・ロスチャイルド』を含め“5大シャトー”と呼ばれます。）。メルドー地方のガロンヌ川河口の左岸にあるマルゴー村に存在し、勿論同村を代表するトップシャトー。ワインのスタイルは優美・エレガントを信条とし、ボルドーワインで最も女性的なワインと表現されています。

シャトー・マルゴーの優れたワインは、世界の中でも最も優れたワインのひとつとして17世紀から知られています。その品質は、テロワールと何世代にもわたりブドウ栽培とワイン生産に携わってきた人々の情熱的な取り組みから生まれました。これは繊細さ、エレガンス、複雑さ、濃厚さ、濃密さ、長続きする味わいと香り、そしてフレッシュさといった特徴が組み合わさった優れたワインで、このようなワインを見つけることは非常に難しいのです。タンニンの強さが素晴らしく仕上がることはよくありますが、収斂性やタンニンが強すぎることはめったにありません。

「シャトー・マルゴー」は、若いうちはタンニンに堅くガードされており、飲み頃を迎えるまでに時間を要しますが、長期熟成を経て現れるうっとりとするような滑らかな舌触り、そして豊かな味わいを持ちます。最高のテロワールで育ち、極めて厳しい選果をクリアした珠玉のブドウだけをグラン・ヴァンに使用。 口当たりの滑らかさ、そしてしっかりしたボディと繊細さを備えた味わい、並外れたタンニンは、非常にしなやかで、柔和で優しく最後まで広がります。

■2023年ヴィンテージ情報■
この年の収穫は通常以上に入念に選果作業に徹し、時間も掛かりましたが、シャトー・マルゴーのワインを特徴づけるピュアなアロマを最大限に引き出すためにも決して手の抜けない作業でした。赤ワイン用ぶどうの収穫は9月11日にメルロの区画からスタート。カベルネ・ソーヴィニヨンの主要区画は9月22日に収穫しています。収穫最終日は10月5日でした。

シャトー・マルゴー2023年ヴィンテージは、精緻な仕上がりと高い複雑性、そして上品さが印象的です。収穫全体の41%をグランヴァンが占めています。濃縮感では前年ヴィンテージに及びませんが、アロマのタイプやタンニンのなめらかなテクスチャーには共通点が確認できます。9月に雨に降られた直後に我々が抱いた予想をある意味上方修正する仕上がりです。偉大なるテロワールは環境の変化に的確に順応し、テロワールの魅力をもってワインをさらに輝かせる… またしてもテロワールが見事に本領を発揮したヴィンテージです。

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Fine oak savouriness, delicate hints of nougat and clove, dark forest berries, cassis, liquorice, floral touch, delicate tangerine zest, seductive bouquet. Juicy, highly elegant, ripe heart cherry, silky, supporting tannins, lively, finely structured, a hint of chocolate and blackberry on the finish, harmonious, balanced, mineral-salty, lingers for a very long time. A perfect reflection of this unique terroir.

The 2023 Château Margaux is clearly one of the greats in the vintage, and it actually reminds me a touch of the 1996, if not better. Revealing a deep purple hue, it has an incredible bouquet of cassis and blue fruits interwoven with classic Margaux floral, sandalwood, spice, and graphite aromatics. It's hard to find a wine in 2023 that has this much density and depth, with sweet tannins and so much charm. The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, all of which will see 20 months in new barrels. Not enough can be said about the genius of Philippe Bascaules and the Mentzelopoulos family, who continue to produce sensational wine after sensational wine.

The 2023 Chateau Margaux is fabulous. Sensual, silky and exceptionally polished, the 2023 Chateau Margaux is shaping up to be a classic. Seamless, silky tannins wrap around a core of dark red/purplish fruit. Hints of spice, new leather, menthol, licorice and rose petal fill out the glass. There's a bit of new oak peeking through today, but that won't be an issue in a few years' time. Only Bordeaux can produce wines that offer so much flavor intensity at a low alcohols. Margaux is the least showy of the First Growths, but it is often the most refined. The 2023 is sublime.
