It fermented with some full clusters with indigenous yeasts in oak vats and matured in oak foudres and bocoyes for 16 months. It's very spicy, peppery and aromatic, floral, a little a la Vosne-Romanee, with depth and complexity, very chalky, nicely textured, tasty, elegant and long. There is concentration and power, with 13.8% alcohol and a pH of 3.48 and 5.1 grams of acidity (tartaric), yet it's very balanced and elegant too. There are 3,973 bottles, 131 magnums and some large formats. It was bottled in April 2022. I tasted two vintages of Quinon de Valmira as part of Alvaro Palacios's portfolio tasting, and I include them here again for context and completeness of this collection of current releases from Rioja. It was produced with 96% Tinto Fino and 4% Merlot that went through a three- to four-day cold soak and fermented with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in stainless steel. The elevage was in new and used 225-liter oak barrels and 21,000-liter oak vats. It has 14.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.8 and 4.78 grams of acidity (tartaric), so it's ripe and with mellow acidity that gives it a mellow mouthfeel. This is a very spicy vintage for Valbuena, getting closer to the style of ?nico (while at the same time I felt the 2018 Pintia from Toro was getting closer to the aromatics of some vintages of Valbuena, like 2010). It was a late-ripening year with a tendency toward freshness in the wines. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with very fine tannins that made the wine nicely textured and very elegant. There is a lot of regularity in the Valbuena of the last few years, here with more tension and freshness of the 2017, a little more balsamic even. 180,580 bottles, 5,528 magnums and some larger formats produced. Very dusty and juicy on the palate, with mealy, powdery tannins that interweave with the fruit. A Valbuena 5 that you can appreciate earlier. Drink or hold.

This is a south-facing location with a tendency to good ripeness and generous wines. It fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in a combination of oak barrels and foudres for eight months. This is the prototype of a wine from clay-rich soils; it's round and vinous, refreshed by the altitude and the slate. This is more lactic than the Moncerbal, very classical and with fine but grainy tannins. Whatever it is, with years in bottle, this is more vinous and rounder and the Moncerbal is sharper. 5,520 bottles, 118 magnums and some larger formats produced. ジェームスサックリング：96 ポイント DESCENDIENTES DE J. It's perfumed, elegant and harmonious, with ripeness, elegance and freshness, with 14% alcohol and superb acidity that make it balanced and lifted up. It comes from six small vineyards ("sorte" locally) planted at the end of the 1970s and 1980s on the north face of the Bibei Valley at 680 meters above sea level on sandy granite soils that give the wine finesse and elegance. It fermented in 500-liter French oak barrels with indigenous yeasts and matured in those barrels with the fine lees for eight months. There's a sense of purity and precision that I like very much, while the texture has very fine granularity. It's very tasty and clean. 23,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024. Rafael "Rafa" Palacios is ecstatic about the quality of his 2023s. He said, "The 2023 vintage corresponds to a typically cool year, which is evident in the quality of the wines. There was good aromatic and phenolic ripeness due to the year, which had more rain than 2024 and milder summer temperatures-it's enhanced by the acidic framework or skeleton of the vintage, which makes it very complete and elegant, one of the best, if not the best, of the last decade." As for 2024, from which I already tasted the entry-level Louro, it "is a slightly more open and accessible vintage, not as vertical as the 2023. For me, it's a more immediate, opulent and flavorful year. The slightly less rain during the season and the higher average temperatures led to a wine with a different profile." Sleek, supple and marked by elegance and poise, the palate is intense yet slightly compact, with a fine talc-like texture on the finish. In fact, earlier vintages of the 2013 San Juan were sold exclusively in Puerto Rico, as the name is the same as its capital city. It comes from seven micro-plots that total some 0.47 hectares planted with ancient vines (estimated to be 140 years of age). In this cool and wet vintage, the wine "only" achieved 13.8% alcohol. The vines are biodynamically farmed, and the grapes fermented in 1,000-liter stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts. It matured in second use French oak barrels for 20 months. It's the most perfumed and showy of the 2013s, with an almost Pinot Noir perfume. It probably has the better nose of the range, with an elegant palate. Truly impressive. Only 561 bottles were filled in September 2015. It comes from the coolest plot, the best place for warm years, with more clay and deeper soils and more retention of water. To me, this outperforms the 2021. The wines always ferment, year after year, in the same vats and barrels. It fermented with 100% full clusters. There are some 8,000 bottles. Raúl Pérez has bought some of the plots he used to vinify for the La Vizcaína range. In 2022, he used less full clusters for the fermentation of the reds. The single-vineyard bottlings of the Ultreia range are gradually being moved to oak foudres, and he's leaving the barriques. So, I was excited when they told me this time we'd taste the 2013 La Roza, produced with grapes from three plots in the La Roza zone of the Atauta Valley that are thought to be some 160 years of age. All the processes follow biodynamic principles, and the wine was bottled after 19 months in second use French barriques. It was closed and felt really tight, but it has the most elegant texture and impressive palate of all the wines. Unfortunately, this is one of those almost virtual wines, as only 295 numbered bottles were filled in September 2015. It fermented with some full clusters and indigenous yeasts in oak vats for 46 days and matured in oak barrels and foudres for 11 months. It's one of the lower-alcohol wines (together with the Corullon) at 13.5% alcohol. This is super aromatic and floral, with notes of violets and also white flowers and even a citrus touch. This is the showier wine of the 2019s?textured, long and gentle, with a great finish. It has changing aromas and flavors, mixing flowers, herbs, berries, earth and even a lactic touch sometimes. It should develop further complexity in bottle. This is a great vintage for Moncerbal, keeping the freshness and poise of the 2018 in a warmer year. Like all of their vineyards, it's farmed organically and biodynamically, and they picked the grapes on September 23 and fermented them partly destemmed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and manual punching down for 47 days. The wine matured in barrel for nine to 10 months. Despite Moncerbal being very showy and floral and almost stealing the show, the depth, complexity and nuance of this 2019 La Faraona is amazing. The palate is a little stiff at this early stage; Ricardo Perez Palacios made the comparison with the 2010 and 2011 vintages that needed some time in bottle to blossom.
