The 2014 Dominus, which is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot really struts its stuff. Moueix’s belief in dry farming seems to be paying off with stronger and stronger vintages, each successive year, and the 2014 is a sexy, opulent, layered, multidimensional wine with notes of red and blackcurrant, cedar wood, tobacco leaf , spice box and licorice. The color is a dense plum/ruby/purple, much like the Napanook. This is a beauty that is already drinking gorgeously - as most 2014s are - and will continue to evolve for 25 or so years. Black cherry, plum, smoke, menthol, licorice, chocolate, dried herbs and dark spices are all pushed forward. Deep, pliant and exquisitely layered, the 2014 possesses tons of concentration and mid-palate depth. Like so many wines in this vintage, the 2014 comes across as a hybrid of 2013 and 2012. I very much like the energy and focus in this wine. This is a fabulous wine in every way. With time in the glass, the flavors gain in brightness and focus. In 2022, harvest began on August 24 for the Merlot and September 2 for the Cabernet Sauvignon (the earliest ever here) and ran uninterrupted through September 26. To be sure, larger estates like Opus One are especially pushed to the edge in difficult years because they are essentially forced to pick through the challenging weather, as the alternative is losing a portion of the crop. The just-bottled 2022 is still coming together, but it is promising, while the 2021 continues to impress.

Exotic spice, pencil shavings, creme de cassis, mocha and licorice are some of the nuances that develop in the glass, but those descriptions can't even begin to capture the sheer beauty of what is in the glass. More importantly, the 1995 shows all of the quirkiness that is such a signature of the Bob Travers-era wines here. The 1995 is gracious and beautifully persistent on the palate, but even those commendable qualities can’t mask a very perceptible element of brett. With age, brett can be an attractive strand in a wine’s fabric. That is very much the case here. In my view, though, the 1995 sits on the edge of where small imperfections are a distraction. Frankly, the 1995 could have and should have been a better wine. Even so, it is very pretty and highly expressive today, with hints of sweet pipe tobacco, crushed flowers and leather that extend the finish effortlessly. Hitting 13.46 alcohol, with a pH of 3.9 and an IPT of 80, this flawless, full-bodied, incredibly elegant Saint-Estephe has silky tannins, perfect balance, and a great, great finish. It will need a decade of cellaring to hit its prime drink window. Of the trilogy of 2018, 2019, and 2020, it's clearly my favorite (that’s splitting hairs), with a similarity to the 2016, and will most likely merit another point at maturity. Try after 2028. vinous：97 ポイント 97 Drinking Window 2026 - 2060 From: Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023) The 2020 Cos d'Estournel, which was bottled in July, has lost some of the exoticism that it showed out of barrel. Within five minutes of aeration it develops a complex bouquet: black fruit laced with graphite and subtle cedar aromas, a charcoal back-note and later pressed iris flowers. I foresee this gaining more nuance with bottle age. The palate is taut, lean and precise. Lightly spiced on the entry, with finely-chiseled tannins, again, not quite as precocious as it showed in barrel, allowing the terroir to come through more. There is something almost understated about this vintage vis-a-vis others, razor-sharp precision with just the right amount of salinity on the finish. This is a classy offering that will mature beautifully in bottle. Silky and light on its feet, the 2020 is incredibly nuanced. In fact it is without question the most finessed of all the top wines in Saint-Estephe, showing more in common with some of its neighbors in the north of Pauillac than the more potent wines of Saint-Estephe. Impossibly soft, silky tannins wrap around a core of dark red fruit, spice and orange zest. The 2020 is not a huge Cos, but rather a wine for readers who appreciate elegance over power. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon comes through loud and clear. All the elements are so well balanced. The 2021 is dark, racy and full of Lafite sensuality, all kicked up by the natural intensity of the year. Dark red/purplish fruit, mint, lavender and rose petal are all on display.
