Scents of cedar shavings and vanilla mark the nose, while the full-bodied palate folds in notes of ripe blackberries and mulberries, plus hints of baking spices. Complex, firm and age-worthy, with a long, focused finish, it should be at its best after about five more years. In the 27 years since its founding in 1994, Torbreck has become one of the icons of Australian wine, championing the old-vine treasures of the Barossa. This year's releases include stunning versions of the winery's top cuvees: The Laird, Les Amis and RunRig. All three rate 97 points or better, with the 2018 RunRig being this taster's personal favorite for its superb balance. Not far behind is the 2018 Descendant, which sells for a fraction of the price and is more approachable as well. That's the one that shrewd wine drinkers will seek out. Fortunately for those of us with skinnier wallets, even Torbreck's other bottlings are excellent, with special mention going to the 2018 Hillside Vineyard Grenache, from vines planted in 1949, and the 2018 The Gask, from Eden Valley vines planted in 1960. Even the entry-level Woodcutter's line is solid, with the 2020 Rose, 2020 Semillon and 2019 Shiraz all scoring 88-90 points. In short, for consumers seeking bold, flavorful wines that reflect their origins, Torbreck is among Australia's top producers.

These soils are not especially compact, and they manage to retain water well. This beautiful wine does indeed present a not-so-subtle ferrous note that pops from the bouquet. Beyond that, it descends slowly into supple and sweet aromas of honeydew melon, Golden Delicious apple, honeycomb and quince. The wine is texturally rich but not heavy, and it ends with a drying mineral edge of crushed chalk. Mullineux was established in 2007 by Andrea and Chris Mullineux (wife and husband) and has emerged as one of the strongest symbols of the South African New Wave. It shows a special focus on Chenin Blanc and Syrah from the Roundstone farm, the regenerative and organic property on the Riebeeksrivier Road in the Swartland. Andrea Mullineux is from an Italian-American family in California, and when she realized she could study winemaking, she enrolled in the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology. She interned in Napa and later in Stellenbosch, during which time she fell in love with Chenin Blanc (that once had a more prominent history in her native California). She also interned in France, where she fell in love with Syrah. She met her husband Chris, a native of Johannesburg, on a train from Bandol to Champagne in 2004. The couple got married in 2007 and started Mullineux (adding Leeu Passant in 2013). "We wanted to maintain the identity of our Swartland wines," she says. Each is about 400 meters in elevation, and all three have bush vines that are harvested at the same ripeness. The major difference lies in the soils, with this vineyard on granite, sandy soils that allow the roots to reach down deep (as much as five meters underground). These vines have a bigger canopy as a result, and the fruit maintains the most natural acidity (and low pH). This wine is characterized by bright fruit flavors and a linear delivery with a salty, mineral-laced finish. It was the first of the three Chenin Blancs poured by Andrea Mullineux during our tasting. (Sep 2024) Sourced from the from the Eikelaan vineyard, the 2023 Chenin Blanc Granite comes 47-year-old vines on granitic, well-drained soils where the vines have bigger roots and canopies, thus providing more shade. It presents a well-defined bouquet that opens over five minutes, revealing hints of yellow plum, Mirabelle and wax resin. The palate is very nicely balanced and very complex, with an oily-textured opening. A touch of white pepper and orange rind emerges toward the finish. However, the Mullineux 2023 Swartland Schist Chenin Blanc is slightly more ample and layered in terms of mouthfeel. Water does not penetrate as deeply on schist soils as it does granite, and the fruit is a little richer and more concentrated as a result. Water tends to run off easily, and the plant root systems remain shallow and produce smaller clusters, a less vigorous canopy and berries with thick skins (with more sunlight reaching the clusters through the leaves). This wine starts off with an incredibly citrusy feel, and yet it also delivers cool-climate Chenin Blanc aromas of green apple and honeysuckle. This wine is built to last, and it's no wonder it was served last in our tasting of the three single-vineyard Chenin Blancs. I would bet on the longest drinking window for this bottle. Those complex fruit flavors still need to flesh out. Mullineux was established in 2007 by Andrea and Chris Mullineux (wife and husband) and has emerged as one of the strongest symbols of the South African New Wave. It shows a special focus on Chenin Blanc and Syrah from the Roundstone farm, the regenerative and organic property on the Riebeeksrivier Road in the Swartland. Andrea Mullineux is from an Italian-American family in California, and when she realized she could study winemaking, she enrolled in the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology. She interned in Napa and later in Stellenbosch, during which time she fell in love with Chenin Blanc (that once had a more prominent history in her native California). She also interned in France, where she fell in love with Syrah. She met her husband Chris, a native of Johannesburg, on a train from Bandol to Champagne in 2004. The couple got married in 2007 and started Mullineux (adding Leeu Passant in 2013). "We wanted to maintain the identity of our Swartland wines," she says. (Sep 2024) The 2023 Chenin Blanc Schist comes from shallow brown slate soils that restrict the vine growth, yielding smaller clusters with thicker skins. It has a perfumed, slightly floral bouquet with yellow plum, jasmine and light stony aromas―my favorite of the three Chenins. The palate has exquisite balance. The Standish Shiraz was the first cuvée launched by Dan Standish in 1999, and the wine is routinely typified by its muscular tannin shape and earthy, savory fruit. The most attractive part of this wine is the splay of exotic market spice (namely sumac, black pepper, star anise and fresh cardamom) that sails in on the coattails of the red/purple fruit. It has all the exoticism and romance of a hike through the mountains of Morocco, yet it, perhaps more than any other wine in the collection, speaks of the Barossa in a clear enunciated voice. So, where does it fit in 2021? The 2021 The Standish Shiraz is finer, prettier and lighter than I have ever seen it at this stage of its life. It has all the spice and Barossan identity that is expected; however, it misses the dense baritone of fruit that is present in earlier iterations. Whether you think that is a positive or not is up to you―I am fond of this wine throughout all its incarnations. Vintage variation is responsible for the spark of curiosity and joy that I experience every year during this release, and the real triumph in 2021 is the ability of the vineyard (this vineyard) to shine through the season that shaped it. 14.9% alcohol. The winemaking remains consistent across the range: handpicked, wild fermented in open-top fermenters and matured in French oak (the same four coopers on rotation―the aim is to the let the vineyards express through the oak rather than an expose of cooper over vineyard) for 18-22 months, depending on the attributes of the season; although this year, winemaker Dan Standish "pulled some of the more aromatic parcels out of oak and egg a little earlier and put them in tank to protect the freshness of the year." The palate is medium-bodied with slightly powdery tannins, dark berry fruit laced with graphite and cracked black pepper. It’s quite structured toward the finish, with an exceedingly long aftertaste. It was made with 1% Viognier co-fermented, with 25% whole bunches in the ferment this year, up from 15% to 20% in 2020. The Relic is one of Australia’s greatest Shiraz Viognier wines, and it’s a sure thing each year for quality and execution of style. In 2020, it was my preferred wine of the collection for its savory, meaty/bacon fat/bloody character. All elements were in balance, and it managed a savory and floral drive within the same glass. Super cool. This year, I love the wine for all the opposite reasons. The 2021 is creamy, plush and almost sybaritic in its outlay of fruit and tannin. At 15.5% alcohol, it's the highest alcohol wine in the 2021 release, yet it doesn’t show that via warmth or harshness in the wine. The whole-bunch component is up slightly this year from last, and honestly, it feels completely invisible in the wine. This is undoubtedly the biggest, most plush wine in the collection, but true to form for Standish, it is balanced and fresh, with a long future in front of it. The red dirt in the ground rises up in the glass and transports me right back there: middle summer, hot, spicy air blowing across the tops of old vines. It's evocative. This 2019 The Factor is Port-y, concentrated and savory as all hell, with charred barrels, lamb fat, black pepper, salted licorice, pomegranate molasses and aniseed. This is about as big as I can cope with and still enjoy it; it takes density and intensity to a whole new level?no surprise for the vintage, the region and the producer. A perfect storm of thunderous strength.
