Scents of cedar shavings and vanilla mark the nose, while the full-bodied palate folds in notes of ripe blackberries and mulberries, plus hints of baking spices. Complex, firm and age-worthy, with a long, focused finish, it should be at its best after about five more years. In the 27 years since its founding in 1994, Torbreck has become one of the icons of Australian wine, championing the old-vine treasures of the Barossa. This year's releases include stunning versions of the winery's top cuvees: The Laird, Les Amis and RunRig. All three rate 97 points or better, with the 2018 RunRig being this taster's personal favorite for its superb balance. Not far behind is the 2018 Descendant, which sells for a fraction of the price and is more approachable as well. That's the one that shrewd wine drinkers will seek out. Fortunately for those of us with skinnier wallets, even Torbreck's other bottlings are excellent, with special mention going to the 2018 Hillside Vineyard Grenache, from vines planted in 1949, and the 2018 The Gask, from Eden Valley vines planted in 1960. Even the entry-level Woodcutter's line is solid, with the 2020 Rose, 2020 Semillon and 2019 Shiraz all scoring 88-90 points. In short, for consumers seeking bold, flavorful wines that reflect their origins, Torbreck is among Australia's top producers.

These soils are not especially compact, and they manage to retain water well. This beautiful wine does indeed present a not-so-subtle ferrous note that pops from the bouquet. Beyond that, it descends slowly into supple and sweet aromas of honeydew melon, Golden Delicious apple, honeycomb and quince. The wine is texturally rich but not heavy, and it ends with a drying mineral edge of crushed chalk. Mullineux was established in 2007 by Andrea and Chris Mullineux (wife and husband) and has emerged as one of the strongest symbols of the South African New Wave. It shows a special focus on Chenin Blanc and Syrah from the Roundstone farm, the regenerative and organic property on the Riebeeksrivier Road in the Swartland. Andrea Mullineux is from an Italian-American family in California, and when she realized she could study winemaking, she enrolled in the UC Davis Department of Viticulture and Enology. She interned in Napa and later in Stellenbosch, during which time she fell in love with Chenin Blanc (that once had a more prominent history in her native California). She also interned in France, where she fell in love with Syrah. She met her husband Chris, a native of Johannesburg, on a train from Bandol to Champagne in 2004. The couple got married in 2007 and started Mullineux (adding Leeu Passant in 2013). "We wanted to maintain the identity of our Swartland wines," she says. Each is about 400 meters in elevation, and all three have bush vines that are harvested at the same ripeness. The major difference lies in the soils, with this vineyard on granite, sandy soils that allow the roots to reach down deep (as much as five meters underground). These vines have a bigger canopy as a result, and the fruit maintains the most natural acidity (and low pH). (Sep 2024) Sourced from the from the Eikelaan vineyard, the 2023 Chenin Blanc Granite comes 47-year-old vines on granitic, well-drained soils where the vines have bigger roots and canopies, thus providing more shade. It presents a well-defined bouquet that opens over five minutes, revealing hints of yellow plum, Mirabelle and wax resin. The palate is very nicely balanced and very complex, with an oily-textured opening. A touch of white pepper and orange rind emerges toward the finish. However, the Mullineux 2023 Swartland Schist Chenin Blanc is slightly more ample and layered in terms of mouthfeel. Water does not penetrate as deeply on schist soils as it does granite, and the fruit is a little richer and more concentrated as a result. Water tends to run off easily, and the plant root systems remain shallow and produce smaller clusters, a less vigorous canopy and berries with thick skins (with more sunlight reaching the clusters through the leaves). This wine starts off with an incredibly citrusy feel, and yet it also delivers cool-climate Chenin Blanc aromas of green apple and honeysuckle. This wine is built to last, and it's no wonder it was served last in our tasting of the three single-vineyard Chenin Blancs. I would bet on the longest drinking window for this bottle. Those complex fruit flavors still need to flesh out. It’s full-bodied and multifaceted, deliciously nutty and spicy, with excellent depth. Long and generous. Drink or hold. VINOUS：94 ポイント 94pts Drinking Window 2025 - 2040 From: South Africa: Where Are We Now? (Sep 2024) The 2023 Chenin Blanc Schist comes from shallow brown slate soils that restrict the vine growth, yielding smaller clusters with thicker skins. It has a perfumed, slightly floral bouquet with yellow plum, jasmine and light stony aromas―my favorite of the three Chenins. The palate has exquisite balance. It’s quite feisty with an oily texture and very good depth. Much more phenolic than their other whites, it closes with a sustained finish. Great potential. - By Neal Martin on August 2024

The Standish Shiraz was the first cuvée launched by Dan Standish in 1999, and the wine is routinely typified by its muscular tannin shape and earthy, savory fruit. The most attractive part of this wine is the splay of exotic market spice (namely sumac, black pepper, star anise and fresh cardamom) that sails in on the coattails of the red/purple fruit. It has all the exoticism and romance of a hike through the mountains of Morocco, yet it, perhaps more than any other wine in the collection, speaks of the Barossa in a clear enunciated voice. So, where does it fit in 2021? The 2021 The Standish Shiraz is finer, prettier and lighter than I have ever seen it at this stage of its life. It has all the spice and Barossan identity that is expected; however, it misses the dense baritone of fruit that is present in earlier iterations. Whether you think that is a positive or not is up to you―I am fond of this wine throughout all its incarnations. Vintage variation is responsible for the spark of curiosity and joy that I experience every year during this release, and the real triumph in 2021 is the ability of the vineyard (this vineyard) to shine through the season that shaped it. 14.9% alcohol. The winemaking remains consistent across the range: handpicked, wild fermented in open-top fermenters and matured in French oak (the same four coopers on rotation―the aim is to the let the vineyards express through the oak rather than an expose of cooper over vineyard) for 18-22 months, depending on the attributes of the season; although this year, winemaker Dan Standish "pulled some of the more aromatic parcels out of oak and egg a little earlier and put them in tank to protect the freshness of the year." It is pure fruited and powerfully aromatic, as this cuvee always is. Interestingly, I am tasting this wine from two different glasses: one opened two days ago, one opened this morning. They are quite different, telling us once again that oxygen really is a friend to this producer, especially if choosing to drink these wines young. While the bottle opened two days ago is complete, balanced and utterly refined, it speaks more of its florals and fruit than it does its savory register of spice and complexity. However, the wine opened today has nuances of bacon fat and exotic spice. It is tightly coiled and springy and nowhere near as giving as the former. So, choose your own path. This vintage is a prettier, finer but no less long or coiled version of itself, and it will prove to be one of the greats in the cellar. The tannins certainly are a highlight for me. A vintage that Lecaillon describes as “difficult in the vineyards but beautiful in the cellar,” it had suffered slightly in reputation due to the gloomy mood during the challenging growing season, but the results are indeed impressive. The fifth edition produced entirely from organically farmed and certified fruit, and heavily based on Pinot Noir, the 2016 represents the contemporary quality of Cristal, combining the concentration of 2002 with the precision and cut of 2013. Disgorged in July 2024 with a dosage of seven grams per liter, it opens in the glass to reveal a bouquet of lemon zest, white flowers and peeled almond, framed by youthful reduction. On the palate, it is bright and electric, with a pure core of fruit, pinpoint mousse and a textural attack, concluding with a long, saline finish.     世界的にも入手困難! ソレラシステムで仕込む高評価ストローワイン。 醸造家のマリヌー夫妻(クリス&アンドレア)がスワートランド地方にあるリーベック・カスティール村近くに2007年に設立したブティックワイナリー。ごく短期間のうちに国内外で南アフリカで最も有名なワインブランドの1つとして地位を確立しました。2020年までにプラッターズ南アフリカワインガイドで30回もの5つ星評価を受賞。さらに2014年、2016年、2019年、2020年と4回のプラッターズ・ワイナリー・オブ・ザ・イヤーを受賞し、歴史を塗り替えました。 また、アンドレアはワイン・エンスージアストの2016年インターナショナル・ワインメーカー・オブ・ザ・イヤーに選ばれ、2017年にはクリス&アンドレア二人でティム・アトキンの南アフリカ・ワインメーカーズ・オブ・ザ・イヤーに選ばれています。 「オレアセイ No.4」は、ソレラシステムで仕込む高評価ストローワインです。美しく甘美で非常に希少なワインは、一口含むと継ぎ目のない美しいテクスチャーに魅了されます。フィンボスのハチミツ、ドライアプリコット、生姜の砂糖漬けやマジパンをも想わせ、驚くほど濃縮された風味が広がります。力強さに加えて柑橘果実のような美しい酸味、見事にバランスの取れた長い余韻を楽しむことができます。 ■テクニカル情報■ 品種：シュナン・ブラン100% 土壌：風化した花崗岩 (パールデバーグ地区) 醗酵：白ワイン用に収穫後、屋根のある野外で16-30 日陰干し、房ごとプレス。オーク樽(旧樽/225L)で自然醗酵(天然酵母) 熟成：醗酵期間も含め、フレンチオーク樽(旧樽)8-12 カ月。ボトリングは2021年産と2008年～2023年までのソレラシステムで熟成されたワインをブレンド。清澄なし、濾過なし。 残糖度：365g/l、Alcohol：8.0%、RS：365g/l、TA：11.4g/l、pH：3.33 Mullineux Olerasay No4 マリヌー オレアセイ No.4 生産地：南アフリカ スワートランド 原産地呼称：W.O. (Sep 2024) The NV Olerasay 4° is the solera that now contains vintages between 2008 and 2023 of their straw wine. It presents a slightly burnished amber hue. The bouquet is very concentrated, displaying scents of lanolin, marmalade, candle wax and just a slight nuttiness. The palate is beautifully balanced with a viscous texture (obviously) and flavors of tangy marmalade intermixed with apricot, mango, a touch of ginger and quince. Very long yet fresh on the finish, this is utterly enchanting. - By Neal Martin on August 2024 “Twenty-three was actually a classic Swartland vintage,” Andrea Mullineux explained. “We had a bigger diurnal shift with very warm days and cool nights. The rains came in March, but we had finished picking by mid-February.” Chris Mullineux continued: “The one wine that opens doors for us in America now is Chenin Blanc, which was, in fact, the most planted grape variety in California until 1987. Charles Krug Chenin Blanc was one of the biggest labels. There was also a Gallo jug wine called Chablis that was 100% Chenin Blanc. So, there is a huge palate recognition for the grape variety.” I asked Andrea about her pet project regarding Semillon Gris, and she told me: “We are working on isolating cuttings of Semillon Gris and working with the Department of Agriculture to get the variety certified in the vineyard and eventually certified as a wine.” Chris offered an insightful view of the 2022 ripening, stating that single-day heat spikes could stop the vines for a few days, resulting in a step-like ripening rather than a gradual one. This was a strong set of new releases from Mullineux, which was advantaged by Swartland’s earlier picking, thus avoiding the February rains. I feel that their individual cuvees that namecheck the soil types are really finding more and more identity each year. The Chenin Blanc and Syrah Schist have their noses out in front this year. Their sweet wines, the Straw Wine and the fourth edition of their solera, Olerasay, now a blend of vintages between 2008 and 2023, are spellbinding.
