The Ceretto 2016 Barolo Bricco Rocche has always been one of the benchmark wines in this revered portfolio. It offers a lovely bouquet that explores some of the more nuanced sides of Nebbiolo that veer into the realms of rose, ash, tar and smoke. These pretty little details frame a solid core of berry fruit, cassis and dried cherry. One of the most distinctive aspects of this wine is the mouthfeel, which manages to impart its power and length without subtracting from its profound elegance. Fruit comes from a 1.5-hectare site owned by the Ceretto family, with sandstone soils at 350 to 370 meters above sea level. This is a Barolo to remember-and save in your cellar. Roberta Ceretto and her family report that all the estate vineyards, since 2015, are farmed according to biodynamic and organic practices. This group of wines includes the second vintage Ceretto's newest addition, the Barolo Bussia, with fruit from a tiny parcel in Bussia Soprana measuring less than one hectare. A substantial young Barolo, the 2020 offers notable mid-palate density and tons of pure explosive energy. Savory and mineral notes abound, but at this stage, the 2020 is a Barolo of fruit and texture. Practically seamless tannins pull it all together. I have a slight preference for the 2021, but it is neck and neck between these two great Barolos. Red and blue fruit aromas add hints of sweetness, but the bouquet quickly moves to iron ore and dusty ferrous notes. Of these three single-vineyard Barolos, Arione has the finesse, Cerretta has volume and structured tannins and Francia, well, has an even greater sense of tannic intensity. Deep, layered and explosive, the 2016 dazzles from start to finish. It possesses remarkable textural depth and mind-blowing balance. Even so, it has shut down considerably since I first tasted it. Rüncot is a wine that typically needs time to be at its very finest. That is especially true for the 2016. - By Antonio Galloni on January 2025 This is a stunning set of wines from Elio Grasso. As always, I tasted the 2021s next to the preceding vintage, which provided a terrific opportunity to compare the wines. I found the 2020s just as compelling as they were last year. The 2021s are the proverbial “iron fist in a velvet glove.” While many 2021s offer a good deal of relatively early approachability, the 2021s here require cellaring. Interestingly, today the Ginestra Casa Matè and Gavarini Chiniera feel a bit inverted in their personalities. The Ginestra comes across as a touch linear in its construction, while the Gavarini shows a bit more volume. I also tasted several vintages of the Barolo Riserva Rüncot that suggest there are great things in store here. These remain gorgeous, beautifully crystalline Barolos. VINOUS：100ポイント 100pts Drinking Window 2026 - 2041 From: 2019 Barolo: Back on Track (Jan 2023) The 2016 Barolo Riserva Rüncot is quite possibly the single greatest wine I have tasted in more than twenty years I have been coming here, with the possible exception of the 1989s and 1990s. Deep and powerful, but not at all heavy, the 2016 dazzles from the very first taste. Dark cherry/plum fruit, menthol, lavender, licorice and mocha saturate the palate in a Barolo of extraordinary richness and intensity. The 2016 spent four years in 100% new oak, and yet there is no trace at all of wood. Boasting noes of baked red cherries, polished leather, savory sweet tobacco, menthol, and cigar box, it offers a plush a rounded texture on the palate, with a nicely balanced, salty, mouthwatering feel, a ripe core, and its polished oak spice perfume lasting on the finish. The Giuseppe Rinaldi 2020 Barolo Tre Tine is still tight and narrow at this young stage, but it will surely flesh out with more time in bottle. There are delicate fragrances of tart berry fruit, cassis and blue flower over a streamlined and very silky mouthfeel. The Ravera vineyard near the winery measures three hectares across two distinct parcels. The first piece that faces Le Coste was planted in the 1980s, and the second parcel that looks toward Novello was planted in the 1990s. Published: Jan 31, 2025 vinous：95 ポイント 95 Drinking Window 2025 - 2040 From: 2020 Barolo: Selective Excellence (Jan 2024) Lifted aromatically, with impeccably polished tannins and fine balance, the 2020 Barolo Tre Tine is super-impressive. In its first vintages, the Tre Tine was pretty imposing and linear from a tannin perspective, but the 2020 stands out for its exquisiteness and balance. Like most wines in this vintage, it is on the lighter side, but that is in no way a bad thing. - By Antonio Galloni on November 2023 Sisters Marta and Carlotta turned out a gorgeous set of 2020 Barolos that embody the style of the year nicely. The wines are aromatic, gracious and super-expressive. I imagine the 2020s will drink well with minimal cellaring. Other than that, not much has changed here in terms of how the wines are made. The Rinaldi sisters continue to honor their parents' legacies, crafting wines that meld together old-school soul with contemporary touches of added precision. Sadly, Brunate was damaged by frost in 2021 and required considerable replanting, so Barolo production will dip for at least the next several years.

Like Roberto Conterno's other wines from this controversial vintage, this wine shines with brilliant and unexpected purity and intensity that is harder to find in its peers. It shows a deep understanding of the potential of a warm growing season, and the Nebbiolo is supple, velvety and uncharacteristically exuberant (for a grape whose elegance starts famously with understatement). Francia in Serralunga d'Alba evokes power and profound depth, with black and purple fruit highlights, rusty nail, cr?me de cassis, grilled rosemary and reddish rock or baked terracotta. It delivers a sense of intensity, clarity and momentum that is rare to find in this warm vintage. It is also a highly complex expression that shows a slow but very interesting evolution in the glass with dark fruit aromas that are fused seamlessly with spice, tarry resin and blue flower. This is a wine with big bones that moves with incredible grace and poise. I would recommend holding the bottle for at least five more years. At the conclusion of my tasting of 2011 Barolo, I concluded that the Bussia vineyard in Monforte d'Alba (with a smaller piece in the Barolo township) performed consistently better in the hot 2011 vintage than any other in the appellation. It is also one of the largest vineyards at 299 hectares, although it is divided into a half-dozen subsections that are farmed by a large number of producers. In general, Bussia occupies a higher altitude with vines planted from 210 and 460 meters above sea level. It boasts excellent exposures with mostly southern and southwestern positioning. These factors have greatly contributed to the quality of fruit in 2011. Higher elevations helped to keep the vines cooler during the hottest moments of the summer. Vines are also well established in this vineyard with extensive root systems that help guard against drought conditions. Of the various estates that farm Bussia, Poderi Aldo Conterno shows exceptional results with this set of new releases. Collectors looking to put aside a few bottles of 2011 Barolo should start here. Dark, rich and sensual, the Vite Talin captures all of the natural richness of the heavily virused, low-yielding clone the Sandrone family propagated in their parcels within Le Coste and Rivasi, both in Barolo. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice, cedar, tobacco and kirsch are all dialed up in this explosive, heady Barolo. The 2017 is just next-level wine. Superb. - By Antonio Galloni on November 2022 Sandrone was the first stop on my trip for this report. Maybe there was some sort of meaning to that. I learned of Luciano Sandrone's passing just as we are going to press. To say Sandrone was a titan of Barolo is a massive understatement. Sandrone defined an entire generation of Barolo growers. With all due respect to his contemporaries, Sandrone did several things none of them did. First, he created an estate from nothing, with no inherited land, but rather with a vineyard he and his wife Mariuccia purchased. Sandrone almost immediately found remarkable balance, crafting Barolos that were decidedly modern in style and appealed to wine lovers reared on the classics. The 1989 and especially 1990 Cannubi Boschis were among his first iconic wines. Last and maybe most importantly, Sandrone was the only grower of his generation to create a winery and was able to climb the ranks and become part of Piedmont's elite, that small group of historic, family-run estates whose wines are highly sought in the secondary market. I tasted these new releases with Sandrone's brother Luca, daughter Barbara and granddaughter Alessia, who represents the next generation. All three wines were spectacular both at the estate and in my office in New York a few weeks later. Luca Sandrone described 2019 as a year with heavy rains in the winter but no extremes during the growing season. Harvest for the Nebbiolo ran from October 9 through 18, starting with Villero and finishing with Le Coste. On that subject, 2019 is the first vintage of Le Vigne that incorporates fruit from Le Coste in the blend. The Aleste and Le Vigne were in tonneau by November, where they finished the malolactic fermentations. Total time in wood was 20-22 months. The Vite Talin follows a different protocol. It was fermented in wood and saw an extended submerge cap fermentation. It spent two years in tonneau and a year in cask. The 2017 is magical.
