This is not that different from the flagship Don Melchor, which is produced from the same vineyard (and I also tasted the 2016 next to this), but it seems to be a little more rustic. It's very tasty, though, and has the Maipo personality with subtle balsamic notes and herbal twists. Very tasty. Concha y Toro is one of the largest wineries in the world, but it's also respected for producing some high-quality wines. They own some 9,700 hectares of vineyards in ten different valleys, from north to south: Limari, Aconcagua, Casablanca, Leyda, Maipo, Cachapoal, Colchagua, Curico, Maule and Bio Bio. They produce something like 190 million bottles. Yes, you read it correctly, that's 190 million bottles. And the quality, in the ranges I tasted, was very impressive, irrespective of the volumes produced.

Scents of cedar shavings and vanilla mark the nose, while the full-bodied palate folds in notes of ripe blackberries and mulberries, plus hints of baking spices. Complex, firm and age-worthy, with a long, focused finish, it should be at its best after about five more years. In the 27 years since its founding in 1994, Torbreck has become one of the icons of Australian wine, championing the old-vine treasures of the Barossa. This year's releases include stunning versions of the winery's top cuvees: The Laird, Les Amis and RunRig. All three rate 97 points or better, with the 2018 RunRig being this taster's personal favorite for its superb balance. Not far behind is the 2018 Descendant, which sells for a fraction of the price and is more approachable as well. That's the one that shrewd wine drinkers will seek out. Fortunately for those of us with skinnier wallets, even Torbreck's other bottlings are excellent, with special mention going to the 2018 Hillside Vineyard Grenache, from vines planted in 1949, and the 2018 The Gask, from Eden Valley vines planted in 1960. Even the entry-level Woodcutter's line is solid, with the 2020 Rose, 2020 Semillon and 2019 Shiraz all scoring 88-90 points. In short, for consumers seeking bold, flavorful wines that reflect their origins, Torbreck is among Australia's top producers.

The Standish Shiraz was the first cuvée launched by Dan Standish in 1999, and the wine is routinely typified by its muscular tannin shape and earthy, savory fruit. The most attractive part of this wine is the splay of exotic market spice (namely sumac, black pepper, star anise and fresh cardamom) that sails in on the coattails of the red/purple fruit. It has all the exoticism and romance of a hike through the mountains of Morocco, yet it, perhaps more than any other wine in the collection, speaks of the Barossa in a clear enunciated voice. So, where does it fit in 2021? The 2021 The Standish Shiraz is finer, prettier and lighter than I have ever seen it at this stage of its life. It has all the spice and Barossan identity that is expected; however, it misses the dense baritone of fruit that is present in earlier iterations. Whether you think that is a positive or not is up to you―I am fond of this wine throughout all its incarnations. Vintage variation is responsible for the spark of curiosity and joy that I experience every year during this release, and the real triumph in 2021 is the ability of the vineyard (this vineyard) to shine through the season that shaped it. 14.9% alcohol. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly powdery tannins, dark berry fruit laced with graphite and cracked black pepper. It’s quite structured toward the finish, with an exceedingly long aftertaste. It is pure fruited and powerfully aromatic, as this cuvee always is. Interestingly, I am tasting this wine from two different glasses: one opened two days ago, one opened this morning. They are quite different, telling us once again that oxygen really is a friend to this producer, especially if choosing to drink these wines young. While the bottle opened two days ago is complete, balanced and utterly refined, it speaks more of its florals and fruit than it does its savory register of spice and complexity. However, the wine opened today has nuances of bacon fat and exotic spice. It is tightly coiled and springy and nowhere near as giving as the former. So, choose your own path. This vintage is a prettier, finer but no less long or coiled version of itself, and it will prove to be one of the greats in the cellar. The tannins certainly are a highlight for me. Built for age but also, in the framework of this beautiful season, absolutely available to you right now. An effortless beauty, here. 14.9% alcohol, sealed under natural cork. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins and a keen thread of acidity, but real structure and density, layers of mineral-rich black fruit laced with black pepper and graphite towards the finish. A vintage that Lecaillon describes as “difficult in the vineyards but beautiful in the cellar,” it had suffered slightly in reputation due to the gloomy mood during the challenging growing season, but the results are indeed impressive. The fifth edition produced entirely from organically farmed and certified fruit, and heavily based on Pinot Noir, the 2016 represents the contemporary quality of Cristal, combining the concentration of 2002 with the precision and cut of 2013. Disgorged in July 2024 with a dosage of seven grams per liter, it opens in the glass to reveal a bouquet of lemon zest, white flowers and peeled almond, framed by youthful reduction. On the palate, it is bright and electric, with a pure core of fruit, pinpoint mousse and a textural attack, concluding with a long, saline finish. (Sep 2024) The NV Olerasay 4° is the solera that now contains vintages between 2008 and 2023 of their straw wine. It presents a slightly burnished amber hue. The bouquet is very concentrated, displaying scents of lanolin, marmalade, candle wax and just a slight nuttiness. The palate is beautifully balanced with a viscous texture (obviously) and flavors of tangy marmalade intermixed with apricot, mango, a touch of ginger and quince. Very long yet fresh on the finish, this is utterly enchanting. - By Neal Martin on August 2024 “Twenty-three was actually a classic Swartland vintage,” Andrea Mullineux explained. “We had a bigger diurnal shift with very warm days and cool nights. The rains came in March, but we had finished picking by mid-February.” Chris Mullineux continued: “The one wine that opens doors for us in America now is Chenin Blanc, which was, in fact, the most planted grape variety in California until 1987. Charles Krug Chenin Blanc was one of the biggest labels. There was also a Gallo jug wine called Chablis that was 100% Chenin Blanc. So, there is a huge palate recognition for the grape variety.” I asked Andrea about her pet project regarding Semillon Gris, and she told me: “We are working on isolating cuttings of Semillon Gris and working with the Department of Agriculture to get the variety certified in the vineyard and eventually certified as a wine.” Chris offered an insightful view of the 2022 ripening, stating that single-day heat spikes could stop the vines for a few days, resulting in a step-like ripening rather than a gradual one. This was a strong set of new releases from Mullineux, which was advantaged by Swartland’s earlier picking, thus avoiding the February rains. I feel that their individual cuvees that namecheck the soil types are really finding more and more identity each year. The Chenin Blanc and Syrah Schist have their noses out in front this year. Their sweet wines, the Straw Wine and the fourth edition of their solera, Olerasay, now a blend of vintages between 2008 and 2023, are spellbinding.

It was made with 1% Viognier co-fermented, with 25% whole bunches in the ferment this year, up from 15% to 20% in 2020. The Relic is one of Australia’s greatest Shiraz Viognier wines, and it’s a sure thing each year for quality and execution of style. In 2020, it was my preferred wine of the collection for its savory, meaty/bacon fat/bloody character. All elements were in balance, and it managed a savory and floral drive within the same glass. Super cool. This year, I love the wine for all the opposite reasons. The 2021 is creamy, plush and almost sybaritic in its outlay of fruit and tannin. At 15.5% alcohol, it's the highest alcohol wine in the 2021 release, yet it doesn’t show that via warmth or harshness in the wine. The whole-bunch component is up slightly this year from last, and honestly, it feels completely invisible in the wine. This is undoubtedly the biggest, most plush wine in the collection, but true to form for Standish, it is balanced and fresh, with a long future in front of it. The winemaking remains consistent across the range: handpicked, wild fermented in open-top fermenters and matured in French oak (the same four coopers on rotation―the aim is to the let the vineyards express through the oak rather than an expose of cooper over vineyard) for 18-22 months, depending on the attributes of the season; although this year, winemaker Dan Standish "pulled some of the more aromatic parcels out of oak and egg a little earlier and put them in tank to protect the freshness of the year." The vineyard was planted with cuttings from the Mt Edelstone (Henschke) vineyard and represents the final pick of the season each year. Made with 100% whole bunches in the ferment, the wine opens with characteristic jasmine tea, bergamot, raspberry, graphite and star anise on the nose. The whole-bunch component, far from overtaking the fruit, is seamlessly integrated from the first instance this year. The wine is a cohesive whole and shows an elegance and presence that is beguiling, to say the least. If anything, the 2021 Lamella is full of aching potential; its future is writ upon the balance of fruit and skin/stalk tannin, freshness and density. For lovers of this cuvee, I cannot recall seeing it so balanced and poised on release. The 2018 (a vintage I reference constantly for its high quality and fruit presence) may challenge this statement, however the cool vintage that birthed the Lamella this year has produced a wine of definition and untold potential. Super. Sealed under natural cork. 14.9% alcohol.
